Arla Gould, age 91, of Spencer, IA, passed away on Monday, January 21, 2019, at St. Luke’s Home in Spencer, IA. Arla was born on July 10, 1927, to parents Hugh and Susan (Brooks) Jones. She grew up on a farm north of Linn Grove and attended grade school at Rossie Schools. She graduated from Peterson High School where she starred on the girls’ basketball team.
On October 23, 1948, Arla was united in marriage to Robert Bryson Gould in Jackson, MN. They were blessed with six children: Deb, David, Becky, Rita, Bob and Rich. She raised her family on the farm, helping out with anything her children or husband needed. Arla was very crafty, a talented seamstress and loved to quilt. She would make her children’s clothing, and later taught her daughters and granddaughters how to sew and quilt as well. Arla was very involved in her community. She was a member of the Friday Art/Card Club and American Legion Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Meadow Township Community Club where she thoroughly enjoyed decorating doors for the Clay County Fair. Arla loved to bake and will forever be remembered for her famous chocolate chip oatmeal cookies.
Arla was a member of the Langdon United Methodist Church where she was involved in several church activities including United Methodist Women and God’s Portion Sale Evangelism. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Her beautiful smile and sense of humor will always be remembered.
Those left to cherish Arla’s memory include her children: Deb Leake of Spencer, IA, Becky Gould of Spencer, IA, Rita (Tim) Smith of Webb, IA, Bob D. (Kaelynn) Gould of Spencer, IA, and Rich Gould of Spencer, IA; 10 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Marilyn Jones of Linn Grove, IA, and Betty Gould of Star City, IN; many extended family members and friends.
Arla was preceded in death by her parents, Hugh and Susie; husband, Bob; son, David; four brothers: DeWayne, Darwin, Bernard, and Wendell; daughter-in-law, Becky Swanson-Gould; sister-in-law, Margaret (Lester) Zinn; brothers-in-law: George (Lorraine) Gould and Art Gould.
