Loren Lloyd Hechtner of Sac City was born August 13, 1923, to Charles Lloyd and Mary Long Hechtner in Coon Valley Township, Sac City, IA, where he spent his entire life. He attended rural school, Coon Valley #2, and graduated from Sac City High School in 1940. He also attended Coe College, Cedar Rapids, IA, (Class of 1944), before his wartime military service. He had further studies at Oberlin College, Worster College, and the University of Chicago while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps and the Naval Air Corps.
He married Marian Olson on June 11, 1946. They were the parents of Dian and Jane. Loren farmed in Coon Valley for 30 years from 1945-75. He also sold tires and roofing for several years after his early retirement from the farm. Loren was a member of United Methodist Church, which he joined in 1937. He served many years on the board and committees of the church and as a delegate to the Annual Conference. He was a lifelong Republican who served on the Sac County Central Committee. He also taught Sunday school and cut and hauled Christmas trees to decorate the church at Christmas for many years. He was President of the Sac City Fine Arts Association during several major musical productions—he was also a cast member of these musicals.
He helped organize the Sac County Swine Producers and served as first president of the organization. He also helped organize the Sac City Swine Cutout Show. He was active in the Sac County Farm Bureau, serving as treasurer and voting delegate. He served as Coon Valley School Treasurer and Secretary and was also a board member of the Sac County Board of Education and the Arrowhead Education Agency Board. Loren was also proud of his service on the Steering Committee to form the Sac Community School District. This proposal was soundly defeated a few years earlier. He loved all the community events and concerts including those at Buena Vista University. He enjoyed travel and was a world traveler including Europe, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Libya as well as nearly every state in the United States.
