Walter Eugene “Gene” Berry, age 83, of Sac City, IA, passed away at his home in Sac City on Tuesday, November 06, 2018.  Gene was born on January 5, 1935, in Sac City, to Walter and Vera (Niles) Berry.  He was baptized December 31, 1950, at the Methodist Church in Lake View and attended country school in Lake View.  When the family moved to the Sac City area he completed high school at the Sac City High School.

In February of 1956, Gene was inducted into the United States Marines serving his country through February 1958.  He met the love of his life, Doris Albers, and they were united in marriage on May 17, 1959, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sac City.  He was confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in January of 1960 where he remained a life time member.  This union was blessed with two children: Keith and Barb.  They made their home on the family farm south of Sac City. Gene and Doris were looking forward to celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary come May of 2019, they share this special date with Doris’ sister Marlene and Ron Meyer.

He spent his entire life doing what he loved; farming, raising livestock, and the great outdoors with family and friends.  Gene enjoyed all simplistic measures of life; any time spent with his grandchildren and never missing a sporting event or livestock show. He enjoyed summers at the Cabin on Long Lake and winters where it was warm in Arizona with Doris, his best friend. He was known for telling stories and loved playing pranks on his grandkids.  There wasn’t a rodeo or western movie he didn’t enjoy watching.  He also enjoyed a daily hand of cards with anyone who wanted to partake.  He was a master chef when he fired up the grill or smoker and added a touch of his homemade BBQ sauce.  His favorite fishing activity was taking his grandkids and relatives to his favorite bluegill hole at the cabin in Minnesota.

Survivors left to cherish Gene’s memory include his wife Doris; their children: Keith (Shelli) Berry of Sac City and Barb (Gary) Ruebel of Des Moines; grandchildren: Dani (Mike) Andersen of Carroll, Tanner (Tonia) Berry of Sac City, Lexie Berry of Sac City, Ben Ruebel of Des Moines, and Katie (Zach) Buehrer of Ankeny; great-grandchildren: Brooks Eugene and Andi Kay Andersen.  Other survivors include his brother Dennis (Deanna) Berry of Lake View; sisters: Beulah (Wendell) Body of Sac City and Judy (Jack) Mason of Des Moines; many nieces, nephews, extended family members and a host of friends.  Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Vera (Niles) Berry.

In lieu of flowers memories may be designated to Unity Point Hospice or the Loring Hospital in Gene’s memory.
