Alberta Highland, age 97, of Sac City, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, October 6, 2018, at Park View Rehabilitation Center in Sac City.
Alberta Vera Brower was born May 17, 1921, to Thomas and Katherina (Klindt) Brower. Alberta and her younger brother, Wayne, grew up on a farm near Nemaha, Iowa. She attended rural school, Wall Lake #4, through 8th grade and graduated from Delaware Consolidated High School in 1940. After graduation she worked at J.C. Penney Company in Storm Lake, Iowa, and later worked for the Fort Dodge Laboratories. After her children were older she worked for three tax seasons at Vest, Mather, and Graven Law Firm. After that she worked for the Department of Human Services for almost 15 years before retiring at age 65.
Some friends introduced Alberta to a good-looking man by the name of Norman Clyde Highland who had served in World War II from 1942 until 1945 and then started farming with his father in Sac City in 1946. Norm and Alberta were married on January 30, 1949, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, during a blizzard. This union was blessed with four children: Carmen, Connie, Jan, and Kent.
Alberta was a member of the Sac City United Methodist Church and enjoyed being involved in various church activities. She was a very talented seamstress, sewing clothing for her family and making many beautiful quilts. She was an excellent cook and baker, everyone loved her brownies and sugar cookies. She also enjoyed traveling with the Iowa State Bank Friendship Club.
Alberta was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. Her kids remember the big garden she planted every year and butchering chickens from which came many delicious meals. She made sure her grandchildren got lessons in swimming, driving, baking, and sewing. And then for a treat she would take them to the Villager for ice cream! But if they misbehaved she would have to “get tough” with them. Alberta will be missed dearly by her family and friends.
Alberta is survived by her children: Connie (Jim) Keller of Des Moines, Jan (Brent) Clemsen of Maple Valley, WA, and Kent (Kellie) Highland of Sac City; eight grandchildren: Erin (Jeremy) McCulloch, Mitch Keller, Emily (Drew) Vandas, Ann Keller, Katie (Buddy) Wood, Leah (Jared) Keeney, Jay (Katie) Highland, and Jamie Highland; great grandchildren: Quinn and Colin McCulloch and Charley Wood; brother Wayne (Vera) Brower; and many extended relatives.
Alberta was preceded in death by her parents; infant daughter, Carmen; her husband of 57 years, Norm, on November 4, 2006; brother-in-law Don Highland; and sisters-in-law Maurine Schnirring, Dorothy Limbrecht, and Marge Brower.
Alberta requested that she not leave this earth in beige or brown, so please note the blue casket. She said she would be watching!!
