Margaret Smith

Margaret Smith, age 98, of Lake View, IA, passed away Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View, IA. Margaret Irene Drey was born on September 29, 1915 in Carroll, IA to parents William and Mary (Lucy) Drey. She was baptized at the Catholic church in Carroll, and confirmed into the Catholic faith at the Sacred Heart Church in Early, IA. She grew up in the Carroll, IA area before moving to Early where she attended Sacred Heart High School, graduating in 1933. She went on to further her education at St. Joseph School of Nursing in Sioux City, IA receiving her degree in Nursing.

She met the love of her life in Kenneth Smith and they were married on February 18, 1947 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early, IA. This union was blessed with five children, Linda, William, John, Connie Jean, and Joseph. Margaret worked for many years serving her community as a nurse. She had a true love for people and continued caring for others well after her retirement from nursing. She enjoyed looking after her friends and neighbors and even kept up her nursing license into her 80’s, “just in case”. In her spare time she loved playing bridge and visiting with her friends and family. She will be dearly missed by all those that knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son John (Connie) Smith; grandchildren: Benjamin (fiancée Abbie Higgins) Smith of Lake View, IA, Brian (Jennifer) Smith of Denison, IA, Adrick Smith of Des Moines, IA, Kayla Smith of St. Paul, MN, CeDric Smith of Lake View, IA, and Charlie (Jen) Spooner of Early, IA; great-grandchildren: Sophia and Jack; sisters-in-law: Elizabeth Smith of Ames, IA and Avis Anderson of Santa Rosa, CA; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth; parents William and Mary; daughters Connie Jean and Linda (In infancy); and infant sons: William and Joseph; sisters: Leone, Lucille, Dorothy and Mary Catherine; and brother Woodrow.
