Evelyn “Evie” Mooney, age 84 of Sac City, IA, passed away on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at Loring Hospital in Sac City. Evelyn Jean Whitehouse was born 1938, to parents George and Jessie (Fish) Whitehouse in Holstein, IA. She grew up and attended school in Sac City. Evie graduated from Sac City High School with the class of 1956.
On October 21, 1958, Evie married Allen John Mooney at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sac City. The couple moved to Spencer, IA, and soon after they were blessed with two children, Echoe and Tom. Evie worked as a receptionist at Al’s barber shop until he passed away at the age of forty-two. Evie attended Cambridge University as well as Buena Vista University, earning her bachelor’s degree in education. In 1982, with Echoe already out of school and on her own, Evie and Tom moved to Remsen, IA, where she taught high school English. She and Tom then moved to Glenwood, IA, and she was a teacher for the Malvern School District. She retired in 2008 and moved back to Sac City to be close to her sister and best friend, Cynthia and Cynthia’s husband, Morris Mooney who is Al’s brother. The two families lived across the street from one another so their friendships go way back to when Evie and Cynthia were just eight and nine years old.
Evie lived an adventurous and illustrious life as a high school teacher, theatre director and on occasion as an actress, and a world traveler. Her years of teaching brought many students in those districts to admire and love her great sense of humor and wit. The theatre community was very close-knit and she made many life-long friends being involved in it. She directed many plays and musicals and was a part of the Spencer Community Theatre as well as the director for school plays. Evie traveled often with Morris and Cynthia to many far-off countries and was quite proud of her studies abroad in England.
Evie loved playing bridge and proudly frustrated many of her bridge friends weekly by winning more frequently than not. Her family and friends adored her and will forever share many great and happy memories of time spent with her; each missing Evie in their own way. What a joyous reunion she will have with Al whom she always said was the love of her life. We pray that she has a wonderful reunion with all of her dear loved ones in heaven until one day we too are reunited with her.
Left to cherish Evie’s memory are her loving son Tom (Wendy) Mooney and loving daughter Echoe LaCaille (Tracy Mooney); cherished grandson Jonah Romain (Becca McDonald); lifelong best friend and sister, Cynthia (Morris) Mooney; many wonderful nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Al Mooney; parents George and Jessie Whitehouse; brothers John “Jack” Whitehouse and George Jr. “Whitey” Whitehouse; sister Meredith (Bob) Lorenzen; and infant sister Bonita Whitehouse.
