Evelyn “Evie” Mooney, age 84 of Sac City, IA, passed away on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at Loring Hospital in Sac City. Evelyn Jean Whitehouse was born 1938, to parents George and Jessie (Fish) Whitehouse in Holstein, IA. She grew up and attended school in Sac City. Evie graduated from Sac City High School with the class of 1956.
On October 21, 1958, Evie married Allen John Mooney at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sac City. The couple moved to Spencer, IA, and soon after they were blessed with two children, Echoe and Tom. Evie worked as a receptionist at Al’s barber shop until he passed away at the age of forty-two. Evie attended Cambridge University as well as Buena Vista University, earning her bachelor’s degree in education. In 1982, with Echoe already out of school and on her own, Evie and Tom moved to Remsen, IA, where she taught high school English. She and Tom then moved to Glenwood, IA, and she was a teacher for the Malvern School District. She retired in 2008 and moved back to Sac City to be close to her sister and best friend, Cynthia and Cynthia’s husband, Morris Mooney who is Al’s brother. The two families lived across the street from one another so their friendships go way back to when Evie and Cynthia were just eight and nine years old.
Evie lived an adventurous and illustrious life as a high school teacher, theatre director and on occasion as an actress, and a world traveler. Her years of teaching brought many students in those districts to admire and love her great sense of humor and wit. The theatre community was very close-knit and she made many life-long friends being involved in it. She directed many plays and musicals and was a part of the Spencer Community Theatre as well as the director for school plays. Evie traveled often with Morris and Cynthia to many far-off countries and was quite proud of her studies abroad in England.
Evie loved playing bridge and proudly frustrated many of her bridge friends weekly by winning more frequently than not. Her family and friends adored her and will forever share many great and happy memories of time spent with her; each missing Evie in their own way. What a joyous reunion she will have with Al whom she always said was the love of her life. We pray that she has a wonderful reunion with all of her dear loved ones in heaven until one day we too are reunited with her.
Left to cherish Evie’s memory are her loving son Tom (Wendy) Mooney and loving daughter Echoe LaCaille (Tracy Mooney); cherished grandson Jonah Romain (Becca McDonald); lifelong best friend and sister, Cynthia (Morris) Mooney; many wonderful nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Al Mooney; parents George and Jessie Whitehouse; brothers John “Jack” Whitehouse and George Jr. “Whitey” Whitehouse; sister Meredith (Bob) Lorenzen; and infant sister Bonita Whitehouse.

“I just read of Evelyn's passing in the Spencer Daily Reporter. I am saddened to read of her passing. I was an 11-year-old girl when Evelyn and Allen as newlyweds moved next door to me and my family - Joe and Betty Miller. Growing up next door to them was a wonderful experience. Evelyn was a great reader and would while away the time reading and eating sunflower seeds. Then Allen would call me and asked me to come over and clean their house. I cleaned their house many times including the house in the country. Evelyn had a great sense of humor and would recite long poems like the Cremation of Sam McGee from memory. Living next door to Evelyn and Allen was one of best experiences of my life. I am so happy that they were a part of my life. God bless. My sincere condolences to her family.”

“Evelyn's dry humor gives reason to recall many stories during our time as teachers at Malvern High School. Husband Roger and I had driven to an away game; and on the way home, Son Kevin rode with Dad and Mom. Mooney was giving a test the next day; and in that home stretch, Kevin was snagged in the car with no way out of a study session with Mom. The fine points were covered, and Kevin did so well on the test! Mooney's congratulatory remark cautioned Kevin's success as "dangerous" because . . . "Now, I'm expecting it!"😊We could go on with more stories; but this is one my family recalls so well. Hugs to Mooney's family!!”

“It's not often that a person who is admired by all she meets, is also the most fun to be around, but such a person is Ev Mooney. I feel so lucky to have been her friend, and so sad to lose her, but heaven must be rejoicing at her arrival. Farewell my beloved friend. Jani”

“My sincere sympathy to the family of Ev. What a joy she was to be around and I know you'll miss her dearly. I knew her in Spencer when we were involved in Spencer Community Theater. I have such wonderful memories of her that I will always cherish!! There was never a dull moment with Ev around. She had such great jokes (especially one I remember!) and always kept us laughing! I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.”
