Arnold D. Ripley Jr., age 66, of Sac City passed away at his home on 2/28/18 following a very recent diagnosis and battle with a rare form of untreatable cancer.  Arne was born on 8/2/1951 in Sac City, Iowa, the son of Arnold D. Ripley Sr. and Norma A. (Hutchinson) Ripley.

Arne attended various schools while growing up as his parents worked road construction.  He graduated from Sac Community High School in 1969.  He was attending Iowa Central Community College to become a forest ranger when he enlisted in the military where he served from 1971 to 1977.  Arne earned recognition for his sharp shooting abilities yet was amused when the Army assigned him to be a cook. Arne always hated onions so he was quick to find places to bury them so he didn’t have to cut them up!

Arne began working road construction at the age of 14 during the summer with his parents.  Although he was considering retirement after 52 years he never got that opportunity.  He was employed by Western Engineering out of Harlan, Iowa.  There was no road that Arne couldn’t build and we were told he could shave the wings off of a gnat with his expert abilities driving a blade.

Arne married Bonnie Jarvis on July 4, 1998.  He chose that date so they would always have fireworks to celebrate their anniversary.

Arne was baptized into the Christian Faith on 2/15/2018.

Arne will be remembered as a beloved husband, dad, grandfather, and the type of friend everyone should be.  A man true to his word who never broke a promise, a person you could always count on to be there for you.  His kids and grandkids were looking forward to spending quality time with him when he retired and doing some fishing.  He will be dearly missed by all that knew and loved him.

Arne’s sarcasm and jokes will never be forgotten.  He loved his family, his friends, hunting, and fishing.  A jack of all trades it seemed, there wasn’t anything that he couldn’t do.

Arne is survived by his wife, Bonnie Ripley of Sac City and his son Chad (Jamie) Ripley, Joel & Jaxson Cromwell and Cadence & Cynlee Ripley of Wall Lake, daughter Brandy Ripley (Shaun Hansen), Allysha (Nolan Huddleson) & Allyssa Vibbard and Tanner Tilley of rural Sac City.  Step-son John Thometz, Bo & Avery Thometz of Harlan, and step-daughter Amy Thometz (Tom Dobbs), Katelynn and Abigail Dobbs of Omaha, NE, mother-in-law Dorothy Jarvis of Sac City, and many extended family members and friends.

Arne was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Norma Ripley Sr., his sister Linda Christensen, and his father-in-law William Jarvis Jr.

Interment will take place at Oakland Cemetery at a later date. A celebration of life will take place at the VFW located in Sac City on April 21, 2018 with family present from 5 pm to 8 pm.

Interment at Oakland Cemetery in Sac City will be held at a later date.

“Arnie was one of my closest running buddies in high school. A lifelong, sardonic friend who will be greatly missed. He had the fastest car around, so fast few would even challenge him in a drag race. He is gone too soon. May he rest in peace.”
