Maybeth Wassom passed away on Friday, August 4, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa at the age of 86.

May Elizabeth Mendenhall was born April 14, 1931 to Harry and Jane (Pitstick) Mendenhall and raised on their family farm near Lytton, Iowa. She graduated from Lytton High School and still has many dear friends from her cheerleading days.  She attended the Teachers College which is now part of University of Northern Iowa, and taught country school early in her life.

On October 26, 1951, Maybeth married the love of her life, George Wassom, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sac City. To this union a son, and two daughters were born: Edward Alan, Sonya Beth, and DeAnna Joy. The couple built their own home together in 1965, on Hilltop Drive in Sac City and resided there for the rest of their married life.  May was a wonderful homemaker, a devoted wife, and a loving mother. Caring for her family, and providing a stylish home brought her great joy and happiness. Her love of baking was often shared, and there were always homemade cookies in the house. She spent many hours in the kitchen, and provided traditional meals which gathered family around her table. She loved her grandsons, and treasured spending time with the boys at the fishing pond.

Maybeth was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church in Sac City, and a longtime member of the Women’s Circle. She enjoyed playing cards with special friends, watching birds and animals at her feeders, and traveling with the family in their Winnebago. She took great satisfaction watching her flowers grow, mowing the lawn, tending the garden, and always had fresh flowers in her home. She served on the Trees for Life committee, and volunteered with Hospice Care.  She will be dearly missed for her kind smile, and by all who knew and loved her.

Her survivors include her three children: Edward Wassom of Boulder, CO; Sonya Johnson of Seattle, WA; and DeAnna Wassom of Santa Barbara, CA; four grandsons: Rabin Walters, Garrett Wassom, Corbin Johnson and Foster Johnson; her sister Lucille Hendricks of Storm Lake, IA and extended family.

Maybeth was preceded in death by her parents, five siblings and her husband, George on June 9, 2007.

In lieu of flowers the Wassom Community Benefit Fund has been established at the Iowa State Bank.

“I'm so sad to know she is gone. She was always such a lovely person. She always made sure I was doing good and I always made sure she had tea or coffee at Circle. I know she is sitting with the LORD.”
