Dr. Tom DeVries passed away peacefully May 9, 2017, at his home in Sac City, Iowa.  Born to Herman and Dorothy (Kral) DeVries on March 25, 1947, in Lake City, IA, Tom attended elementary school in Lytton, IA, and graduated high school from Lake City, IA.  Tom served in the United States Army from 1968-69 including his deployment to Vietnam.  Tom attended Palmer College of Chiropractic where he was in the brotherhood of Pi Kappa Chi and graduated in 1974.  He was married to Nancy Franey on May 18, 1974, at St. Mary’s parish in Lake City.  They have three amazing children: Shawn, Eric, and Katie.  He was an active member at the First Christian Church in Sac City.

Tom used his hands to enrich everyday life for those he loved and cared for.  As a Chiropractor he healed others with his positive energy and caring touch.  As a father he held his children’s hands and guided them, teaching important life lessons.   As a husband he showed his unconditional love and patience, offering a sweet little pinch each morning.  As a friend he poured a stiff drink and always made sure your belly was full.  As a brother he teased, helped, and supported.  As a grandfather he held his grandkids and showed them “how stuff works.”  As a community member he gave and volunteered his hard work to build and encourage others.  As a gardener he pulled his vegetables to make everyone’s favorite salsa and he picked the most beautiful flowers to brighten up a room.

Tom loved his chiropractic profession and never stopped educating himself.  He attended many seminars and classes that made him the best at what he did.  He touched so many people’s lives by healing and tending to them, offering sage advice and support to his patients, family, friends, and acquaintances he met along the way.

Tom’s hobbies included everything cars - putting old ones back together but really, everyone knows it was all about the hunt and finding a deal.  He was very proud of his BBQ, even building a giant smoker from scrap metal with his friends. And Tom always enjoyed pulling off a subtle, clever prank that people would tell others about and that we all will remember.

Tom is survived by his wife Nancy; children: Shawn (Kelli) DeVries of Cedar Rapids, IA, Eric (Wendy) DeVries of Mapleton, IA, Katie (David) DeVries - Rapp of Chicago, IL; sisters: Linda Jackson of Jefferson, IA, Linnette (Bob) Sondgeroth of Jefferson, IA, Terri (Frank) Martin of Des Moines, IA; grandchildren: Benjamin & Okie DeVries of Cedar Rapids, IA, Parker, Ellena, & Olivia DeVries of Mapleton, IA; and many extended family and friends. Preceded in death by parents Herman & Dorothy DeVries, and parents-in-law Raymond & Bernie Franey, brother-in-law Ken Reuter.
                                And remember: “Drink more water!”

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for all of Tom’s favorite local organizations.

“I have many memories of my friend and business compatriot Tom from so many years ago, but I can still clearly hear his voice and laugh from the many times we enjoyed together at the Carriage Room of the Carlson House, or at his home. He helped me through a bad time with an auto accident injury (which is bothering me again now and I could sure use his help today!). I know he loved his family, his business, and his community. He was a good friend and I regret I had not stayed closer to him in the past years. My sincere sympathy to his family.”

“Robert Schueneman and I operated the computer business next door to Tom's chiropractic office for a few years. It was normal and eventually expected for him to stop in daily to say hello, tell a joke or ask why in the world his printer wasn't printing. I only regret not knowing him on a more personal level as he was a very kind, humorous and intelligent man. For that, my heart aches for those of you who were fortunate enough to have been close to Tom in this life and my thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of grieving. ”

“I have often told people of the amazing chiropractor of my childhood. He was so great at his practice I often referred to him as a 'witch doctor' because the results were unexpectedly magical. More than that, though, I will always remember his kindness, warm smile, and his compassion for people. Truly a great man, then and always.”
