Joyce Jean Groen, age 93, of Wall Lake, IA, passed away on Tuesday, May 2, 2017, at Twilight Acres in Wall Lake, IA. Joyce and her twin brother Jack were born on May 20, 1923, to Howard and Elsie Young in Sac City, IA, and were the youngest of nine children. Elsie passed away when Joyce and Jack were infants and they were then adopted. Joyce was adopted first by Ed and Maude Stringer of Perry, IA. She was not happy there and was subsequently adopted by Harlan Lester and Laura Stubbs of Sac City, who had earlier adopted her brother, Jack. Joyce took their name of Stubbs as her maiden name.  She grew up and attended school in Sac City.

Joyce married Lawrence Groen of rural Vail, IA, on August 17, 1942, and they made their home there with a short time of residence in Westside, IA. They farmed until Lawrence’s retirement in 1984 when they moved to Wall Lake. Lawrence passed away on October 26, 2001.

To Lawrence and Joyce’s union were born two children, Bonnie Jean (David) Libby of West Des Moines in 1943, and Lawrence Richard Groen, Jr. of Denison, IA, in 1945. Joyce was first and foremost a wonderful wife, mother, and homemaker. She enjoyed sewing and many other handicrafts, baking excellent pies as well as other baked goods, dancing, reading, and studying/reading the Bible. Joyce was the sweetest person you could ever meet, yet very strong. She always put others first and was totally unselfish. Joyce  was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake, IA.

Those remaining to mourn her absence but rejoicing in her salvation and eternal life because she had accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior are: children Bonnie (David) Libby of West Des Moines, IA, and Larry Groen of Denison, IA; brother Jack Stubbs of Ottumwa, IA; two grandchildren Annette (Ryan) Groen Hansen of Schaller, IA, and Eric (Dr. Amy) Groen of Ankeny, IA; great grandchildren Abigayle, Matthew, and Taylor Hansen, and Abraham, Simon, Esther, and Benjamin Groen; sister-in-law Lucile Ransom of Wall Lake, IA; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

In addition to her husband Lawrence, Joyce was preceded in death by her parents Howard and Elsie Young and Harlan and Laura Stubbs; brothers Ken Young, Robert Young, Byron Young, and Maurice Coates; sisters Margaret Dozier, Maurine Ott, and Maxine Jacobs; and several sisters and brothers-in-law.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Twilight Acres in Wall Lake, IA or to Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake, IA.
