John William Alexa, age 84, passed away on Sunday, August 7, 2016, at his home in Sac City, IA. John was born in Crystal Falls, MI on December 3, 1931 to John M. and Meryl (Magray) Alexa. He graduated from Forest Park High in 1950, just as the Korean War broke out. He joined the US Army three weeks later. John did his basic training at Fort Knox, KY, then Japan and later on to Korea. He was honorably discharged in Fort Carson, Colorado Springs, CO and returned home in 1953.
Upon his return, John worked for Sears and Roebucks as a division manager and met his true love, Leona Mueggenberg. They were soon engaged and moved to Omaha, NE where he transferred with Sears. In 1961, John and Leona moved to Sac City and were united in marriage at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church by Father Tolan in 1962. John took over the DX Station until they closed and went to work for Nobles Industries for 17 years as a supervisor in the shipping and receiving department until they closed in 1980. He then spent seven years working for IBP in Dakota City, NE and retired from there in 1992. John continued to stay busy working part time for MGM Plumbing and Heating in Sac City for 18 years and retired due to health reasons.
John was an active member of the VFW and Honor Guard for over 54 years. He was also a past commander of the American Legion and a member of DAV. John was very involved within his church. He started as a janitor and continued to be a catechism teacher, Eucharist Minister, Usher, Lector, and then became a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Member. He also delivered communion to the home bound and to the nursing homes.
John was a big fan of the Chicago Cubs, Green Bay Packers and of course, the Iowa Hawkeyes. He was a proud 35 year member of Alcoholics Anonymous. John loved hunting, golfing and took many family fishing trips throughout the Midwest and Canada. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren which brought him great happiness. He taught many youngsters the art of sports. John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, who will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his three daughter’s: Teresa (Charlie) Loxterkamp of Sac City, IA, Debra Beacom of McCook Lake, SD, Diane (Monte) Conrad of Waterbury, NE; grandchildren: Karen Willoughby, Amber (Matt) Dickman, Ashley (Joe) Verdoorn, Chelsea and Sidney Loxterkamp, John W. and Gabrielle Alexa; great-grandchildren: Christian, LaRena, Sophia, McKenna, Davey, Finley, Alexa, Geneveive, and Franklin; sisters: Bette Haug of Golden Valley, MN, Donna (Don) Aberly of Crystal Falls, MI; daughter-in-law Lisa Alexa of Sioux City, IA; many nieces, nephews and extended family members.
John was preceded in death by his wife Leona in 1998; son John M. in 2001; great-grandson John M.; parents John M. Sr. and Meryl; brother Donald; sister Emerald; son-in-law Jim Beacom; as well as aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.
