     Robert “Butch” Hemphill, age 65, of Odebolt, IA, passed away on Sunday, October 11, 2015, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, IA.  Butch was born September 18, 1950, in Sac City, IA, to Robert and Alice (Hanson) Hemphill.  He was baptized and confirmed at the Odebolt United Methodist Church where he remained a life-time member.

     Butch graduated from Odebolt High School with the class of 1968 and continued his studies at Morningside College and Iowa State.

     On April 6, 1974, Butch and Judy Frey were united in marriage at the United Methodist Church in Odebolt.  They celebrated 41 years of marriage and were blessed with a son, Jared.  Butch worked the past 37 years at Farmers Coop in Odebolt where he was Director of Quality Management Systems.  His friendly nature and willingness to help others carried throughout his life.  He served on the Odebolt volunteer fire department, City Council for 14 years and Mayor for the last 2 years.  He enjoyed golf, watching the Chicago Bears, bowling, and cherished time in Okoboji with his family and friends.  He took great pride in the appearance of his lawn and was a caring and gentle man, who loved feeding the birds and squirrels.  He loved to cook and grill. His greatest joy was making “Papa Pancakes” for his precious grandson.  He dearly loved his family and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

     Those left to mourn his passing include his wife Judy; son Jared and wife Jill of Waukee; grandson Brayden; mother Alice Hemphill of Odebolt; sisters: Joan Davis of Hampton, VA, and Ann Hemphill of Carroll; extended family members and many friends.

     Butch was preceded in death by his father Robert Hemphill; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bill and Florence Frey.

But it was at Farmers Coop that Butch was everyone's friend. Butch gave a lot to his customers and his community. I am glad I got to see him at last summer's Creek Days.

“Hello Judy, Alice and family, Some of my best childhood memories come from my association with Butch and his family. Great times at the Hemphill farm: Monopoly and oyster soup for Bob and Alice and Paul and Dolores (had to be a Friday night, right?) playtime for me, Valerie, Joan and Butch. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Butch had great toys. The best of the best. And that trip to the Black Hills. Still have the pictures. And Butch on Kids Korner with Canyon Kid. Butch was a pioneer and a kind of hero to us kids. I'm sorry as hell that he's gone and won't get to speak with him again. But Butch lives on in my heart. Take care of yourselves, everyone.
