Beulah and son Leighton Jessen

Beulah B. Jessen, age 95, of Sac City, Iowa passed away Friday, October 3, 2014 at Parkview Rehabilitation Center in Sac City, Iowa. Beulah Berniece Mercer was born on August 21, 1919 to parents Emery and Eva (Calhoun) Mercer in Hornick, Iowa. She received her elementary education in Hornick and her secondary education in Treynor, Iowa, where she graduated in 1938. She met the life partner in LaVern Jessen and they were married on April 26, 1942 in Missouri. They were blessed with three children: Dennis, Dianna, and Leighton.

Beulah worked hard to support her family as a clerk at the Fister Department Store in Sac City, IA, a cook in the Wall Lake School, at Vilas in Storm Lake, IA, and GE in Carroll, IA before her retirement in 1989. She enjoyed knitting and crafts, and gifted her children and grandchildren with items she had hand-made. She will be dearly missed by all those that knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son Dennis of Fort Dodge, IA; daughter Dianna (special friend George Weir) of Sac City, IA; grandchildren: Melissa (Mis) Senecaut of Des Moines, IA, Ryan (Donna) Jessen of Wall Lake, IA, Melanie (Bob) Babe of Sac City, IA, Stephanie (Chad) McFarland of St. Louis, MO, Kimberly (Brian) Herbst of Cedar Falls, IA, Amy (James) Lofflin of Des Moines, IA, Natalie Freese of Schaller, IA, Nicholas Jessen of Ames, IA, Derek Jessen of Alta, IA, and Benjamin Jessen of Ames, IA; and 13 great-grandchildren, extended family members and friends.

Beulah was preceded in death by her husband LaVern on February 7, 1973; her parents Emery and Eva; her son Leighton; son-in-law Paul Johnson; and daughter Phyllis Jean (in infancy).
