Greg Simpson, age 37 of Sac City, IA, passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at his home in Sac City. Gregory Ray Simpson was born on July 29, 1987, to parents Doug and Peg Simpson in Sac City. He was baptized as an infant at the First Presbyterian Church in Sac City and again as a teenager at the First Christian Church in Sac City. He attended Sac City Community Elementary and High School, graduating with the class of 2006. Greg was an ambitious youngster who always kept those around him on their toes. He was very loving, caring, and quite artistically talented.
After graduating high school, Greg attended Iowa Central Community College and then worked at VT Industries in Sac City. On April 19, 2011, Greg joined the United States Air Force. He went to boot camp at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX, and then went to Florida to continue his training. After that, Greg was stationed in Japan for two years. It was there that he would meet his bride, Brenda Catalan. On November 12, 2014, Greg and Brenda were married in Arizona, where Greg was stationed. They made their home in Buckeye, AZ. Together they enjoyed traveling whether it be to nearby cities for the weekend, to other states like Florida and Texas just to name a few, or back to Japan and the Philippines to see Brenda’s family, they always looked forward to their future trips. Greg liked all genres of music and especially loved hearing Brenda sing. They attended church at Christ Church of the Valley.
Greg was honorably discharged on June 15, 2020. In February 2022, Greg moved back to Sac City.
Greg was a ‘gamer’ for most of his life and loved watching Rick and Morty on TV. Greg was athletic and in high school, he played football, baseball, and was in wrestling. He really enjoyed all three. He liked all the Marvel characters and movies, and followed the Minnesota Vikings and Iowa Hawkeye football teams.
In the days since Greg’s death, he has been described as so many wonderful things…his potential was great. These things are true but what is also true is that he suffered from a disease that often goes unnamed in obituaries. Greg was an alcoholic who wanted so badly to turn things around but the pervasive disease would have it otherwise. Alcoholism is a stigmatizing disease that is misunderstood and often dismissed as a weakness or personal failure. It is neither. Greg would want his life, as well as his death, to bring light to the shadows, illuminating the darkness that too many sit alone in, the darkness that ultimately engulfed him and took him from us. He had a loving family that supported him and prayed for him to beat this disease. Addiction still won. Addiction does not discriminate. No one is immune. Greg’s addiction does not define his life, but it ended it. It stole his future leaving those who loved him brokenhearted. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his ex-wife, Brenda Simpson of Buckeye, AZ; parents Doug and Peg Simpson of Sac City, IA; siblings Bob (Angie) Simpson of New London, MN, Tina (Mike) Zimmerman of Sac City, IA, and Mandy (Kevin) Hedberg of Sac City, IA; brother-in-law Alvin (Mirrol) Catalan of the Phillipines; nieces and nephews: Jakob, Layla, Evie, and Bella Simpson, Jamie (Jared) Meister, Ryan Zimmerman, Logan, Braden, and Makenna Hedberg, Myra and Almira Catalan; parents-in-law Benjamin and Alicia Catalan of the Phillipines; aunts and uncles: Sandra Heath, Carol Gregg, Kay (Gary) Streeter, Judy (Darrell) Van de Kral, Bette (Brian) Lohff, Kathy (Robert) Winchester, Kris (Mark) Crabb, Rita Neuhring, Leonard (Diane) Simpson, and Ken (Linda) Simpson; many cousins, other extended family members and friends.
Greg was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Robert and Dorothy Neuhring; paternal grandparents Millard and Lucille Simpson; uncles Bob Neuhring, Ronny Gregg, and Don Heath; aunts Linda Simpson and Val Simpson; and his faithful K9 companion of 17 years, Allie.
