Phyllis Luke, age 88 of Sac City, IA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 29, 2023, at Park View Rehabilitation Center in Sac City. Phyllis May Roth was born on July 15, 1935, to parents Henry and Magdalen (Schulte) Roth in Carroll, IA. She was baptized, received her First Holy Communion, and confirmed at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Carroll.  Phyllis attended Sts. Peter & Paul Grade School and St. Angela Academy both in Carroll.  She graduated with the class of 1953.
On April 11, 1959, Phyllis married Maurice Dean Luke at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. This union was blessed with three children, Christine, Steven, and Brad. Phyllis and Maurice made their home in Sac City where they raised their family on a farm southeast of town. After high school and until her children were born, Phyllis worked in the Carroll County Assessor’s Office for several years. She later worked at Indian Lanes Bowling Alley in Sac City when the new bowling alley was built, continuing to work there for over 15 years. She put the most work in, however, at home, being a mom to three. She always planted and harvested a garden followed of course by a lot of hours canning. She also helped around the farm when needed. Phyllis always kept her house neat and tidy and enjoyed baking for her family.
Phyllis and Maurice were members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Phyllis served on the Guild, holding several offices.    She taught CCD for several years. She also served as leader for several years when Chris was in Campfire Girls.
Phyllis enjoyed bowling and bowled on a ladies league for many years. Phyllis also enjoyed playing Bridge and got together on a regular basis with her friends to play. When their kids were younger, she and Maurice took them on family vacations/camping trips to the Black Hills, to Montana, and to the Ozarks. The two of them also enjoyed many trips together, especially with the area Friendship Club.
Phyllis loved her family and spending time with them brought her great joy. She will be dearly missed by them and by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include her children, Chris (Randy) Batz of Sac City, Steve (Stacey) Luke of Elk Horn, IA, Brad (Melissa) Luke of Lakeville, MN; grandchildren:  Brock, Ethan, Alison, Jacquelyn, and Sarah Batz, and Tanner Sporleder; sister, Judy (Jim) Peitz of Oregon City, OR; sisters-in-law, Barbara Luke of Des Moines, IA, Lois Luke of VA, and Marilyn Roth of MT; many nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Magdalen Roth; husband, Maurice Luke; brothers Tom Roth and Bill (Betty) Roth; sister Alice (Ray) Goreham; parents-in-law Vernon and Beulah Luke; brothers-in-law Colin Luke and Alden Luke; and infant sister-in-law Delores Luke.

“I will always remember Phyllis stopping by our old house and dropping off vegetables from her garden and visiting with mom. As I got older I was always welcomed at their house when I was working. I remember Aunt Phyllis as a hard-working, super friendly aunt. Sorry I wasn't able to attend and I will never forget the day I shot uncle Maurice in the head with my b.b. gun :)”
