Alvin John Roth

Alvin John Roth, age 87, of Wall Lake, IA, passed away on Friday, December 13, 2013, at Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake. Alvin was born on December 6, 1926, in Wall Lake, IA, to Roy and Esther (Bonnichsen) Roth. He was baptized in the Methodist Church as an infant and confirmed his faith at Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake on February 15, 1948. He remained an active member of Peace Lutheran and served on the Board of Evangelism and Fellowship. Alvin grew up near Wall Lake and attended Levi #4 Country School. He was inducted into the United States Navy serving his country aboard the USS Enterprise during WWII.

On February 17, 1948, Alvin was united in marriage to Betty Wunschel at Peace Lutheran Church by Reverend Christensen. They were blessed with five children: LaRoy, Gary, Lynette, Barb, and Kevin. They made their home in Wall Lake. Through the years Alvin worked hard to support his family. He was employed as a farmhand, worked at Farmland in Denison, was a heavy equipment operator, and did landscaping for others.

He was a member of the American Legion Post in Wall Lake. Alvin enjoyed woodworking, playing cards, going to new restaurants, tending his garden, and watching the squirrels and birds on the feeders. He never complained and always had a good attitude. Spending time with his family and grandkids has always been his greatest love. He will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his wife Betty of Wall Lake; his children: Gary (Pat) Roth of Wall Lake; Lynette (Craig) Blum of Wall Lake; Barb Roth of Sioux City, IA; and Kevin (Sue) Roth of Sheldon; seven grandchildren: Brad (Amy) Blum, Stuart (Marisa) Roth, Tricia (Jason) Wood, Mike (Brooke) Blum, Amber (David) Roth, Nathan (Sara) Roth, and Jami Atkins; great-grandchildren: Levi, Dakota, Shae, Olivia, Alexys, Aubrey, Payton, Addyson, Jaxyn, Hillary, Gaige, Paisley, Landon, Evan, Cael and Harrison. Other survivors include his sister Betty (Chuck) Brotherton of Wall Lake; brothers-in-law: Jeryl Reiter of Wall Lake, Duane (Bev) Wunschel of Wall Lake and Eugene Wunschel of Lake View; many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
