Dorothy Berg, age 89 of Newell, IA, formerly of Early, IA, passed away on Friday, March 5, 2021, at Newell Good Samaritan Society in Newell, IA. Dorothy Louise Hase was born on December 16, 1931, to parents William and Olga (Miller) Hase near Schaller, IA. She was baptized on February 7, 1932, at Schaller Emmanuel Lutheran Church. She grew up on a farm SE of Schaller and west of Nemaha, where she attended grade school at Sulfur Springs. Dorothy graduated from Haynes High School, just south of Storm Lake.
On August 28, 1948, Dorothy was united in marriage to Harold Dean Ohrtman in Plymouth, NE. This union was blessed with six children: David, Beverly, Duane, Kenneth, Barbara, and Robert. The early years of this marriage were spent on a farm in Pocahontas, IA, until 1964, when the family moved to a farm in the Varina, IA, area, where she took on the role of farm wife. Dorothy’s life was forever changed after losing their son Duane to a tragic accident and just one year later in 1974, husband Harold, two of their children, Barbara and Robert, as well as Harold’s mother to a tragic car accident.
Later in life, Dorothy found comfort and friendship with Gerald Berg, and they were united in marriage. Dorothy loved the outdoors and enjoyed tending her garden, bird watching, and was always up for a camping trip. She also liked to do crafts, sew, and puzzles. Faith was important to Dorothy and she was very active in her church. She cherished time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Dorothy will be missed dearly by all those who knew and loved her.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Beverly (Bill) Rice of Storm Lake, IA, and Kenneth (Debra) Ohrtman of Storm Lake, IA; grandchildren: Wendy (Andy) Larson of Storm Lake, IA, Tyson (Christina) Rice of Storm Lake, IA, Lisa (Ryan) Bertrand of Sioux City, IA, Nick Ohrtman of Peterson, IA, Teresa Gardner of Fonda, IA, Travis (KaMay) Ohrtman of Maryville, WA, Katie Davison of Sioux City, IA, and Zane Ohrtman of Maryville, WA; 18 great-grandchildren; special niece and nephew Diane O’Hern of Eagle Grove, IA, and Mike Madsen of Alta, IA; special friends Karla Pickhinke and Sharri Hanson; many other extended family members and friends.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband Harold Ohrtman; children: David, Duane, Robert, and Barbara Ohrtman; Husband Gerald Berg; and sister Lucy (Bill) Madsen.
