Virgean ‘Jean’ Baker, age 96 of Sac City, IA, passed away on Friday, January 1, 2021, at Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View, IA. Virgean Rose Lange was born on February 23, 1924, to parents Henry and Ida (Carmen) Lange in Fonda, IA. She attended Fonda High School, where she played basketball and graduated with the Class of 1941.
On October 20, 1942, Jean was united in marriage to Carl William Swenson Sr., in Dakota City, NE. This union was blessed with six children: Sandra, Carl Jr., Jimmy, Richard, David, and Becky. They made their home in Sac City, IA, where Jean worked various jobs, including Duffy’s Produce and Noble Popcorn where she worked well into her eighties before retiring. Carl passed away in 1967. Later in life, Jean was united in marriage to Joseph Wayne Baker. He passed away in 1979.
Jean was an excellent cook and baker. She loved being in the kitchen, especially if it meant making food for her loved ones. Her family meant the world to her. Without fail, every Christmas, Grandma Jean found the perfect gift for every grandchild. Jean adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and spending time with them came before anything else. In her free time, she enjoyed gardening and canning, tending to her many flowers, and taking road trips to the casino in Sloan, IA. Jean was a long-time member of the First Christian Church and volunteered her time and talents. She also helped make Sac City’s first World’s Largest Popcorn Ball. Her warm, caring ways will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved her.
Left to cherish her memory include her children: Richard (Christy) Swenson of Lake View, IA, David (Cheryl) Swenson of Lake View, IA, and Becky (Kevin) Morris of Sublette, KS; grandchildren: Cameron (Debbie) Miller, Barbara (Cory) Weber, Jenny (Jimmy) Stock, John (Vanessa) Swenson, Beth (Andrew) Snyder, Cody Ausborn; great-grandchildren: Dalton, Tori, Brayden, Gunnar, Keely, Bennett, Heidi, Emma, Avery, Owen, Wyatt, and Ashton; granddaughter-in -law Abby Stanford; son-in-law Craig Miller; brother Leo (Shirley) Lange; several nieces, nephews, extended family members, friends, and special neighbors, the McKeevers: Mitch, Laura, Nathan, and Megan.
Jean was preceded in death by her daughter Sandra Miller, and two sons Carl Jr. ‘Gus’ Swenson and Jimmy Swenson; first husband Carl Swenson Sr. and second husband Joseph Baker; and grandson Ryan Ausborn.

IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, memorials may be sent to the First Christian Church 501 Park Avenue in Sac City, IA, 50583, in Jean's memory.

“Jean was such good friends with Mom, Rhoda Lewis. They so looked forward to Bingo (anywhere) or even the bus rides to a casino, when available. Her pig-picken cake was unforgettable. I never could figure out where the name came from. She will be missed.”
