Debra Tjaden, age 67 of Lake View, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, July 1, 2020 at Park View Rehabilitation Center in Sac City.  Debra Marie Tjaden was born on April 18, 1953 to parents Farrell and June (Wiese) Tjaden in Sac City, Iowa. Debra was a lifetime member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Lake View.

Debra grew up in Lake View where she attended Lake View Elementary School. She graduated in 1971 from Lake View-Auburn High School and went on to Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education in 1975. Debra was a natural with children, making her a favorite babysitter, a gifted Sunday School teacher, and beloved aunt. Barely in her twenties, she became the first female telephone lineman in the area and she continued to work in the field her whole life, retiring in 2010 from Windstream Communications. Her deep interest in local history then led her to join the Lake View Historical Society and contribute a great deal of interesting research.

Debra was especially devoted to her family, serving as its chief record keeper and foremost genealogist. She also had a real sense of occasion, creating elaborate Halloween costumes for her niece and nephews, planning Easter egg hunts and making Christmas extra special with thoughtful gifts and surprises. She will be missed deeply by all who knew and loved her.

Debra leaves behind her brothers: Steve (Mary Ann) Tjaden and Bruce Tjaden, both of Lake View; niece Stefanie (Josh) Lawrence of London, England; nephews Nicholas (Michelle) Tjaden of Fort Dodge, Iowa and Aaron Tjaden of Marion, Iowa; great-nieces and nephews: Magnolia, Abraham, Trice, Oliver, Emory and Jack; many other extended family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Farrell and June Tjaden.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to all family near and dear to Debbie. We will dearly miss the sweet, bubbly, and cheerful demeanor Debbie shared with the world. We wait in loving anticipation to be reunited with her in heaven, and pray with joy for the great acts she performed during her time on this Earth.
My personal favorite memory of Debbie was one July, I'm not even sure what year it was, several summers ago, when RAGBRAI came through Lake View she hosted our group. A truly wonderful and joyous time that summer to visit and share with her as she graciously opened her home to us.
God Bless each and every one of you during this time of mourning and celebration of a truly incredible life!”

“Bruce, Steve and family,
Karlene and I were so sorry to hear of Debbie's cancer diagnosis and even more saddened to hear she had passed. She was our classmate and friend from Kindergarten through graduation. Well never be able to drive on the highway up by Madison Street without remembering Deb and the Tjaden family. We will really miss her.
We had hoped to visit or send her a note once we learned where she was to be rehabilitating. Please let us know if you have designated any specific organization(s) for memorials.
Please know we are so very sorry for your loss.
Karla Bahrenfus Kearney”

“Deb will truly be missed as a friend and colleague as part of the Lake View Historic Preservation Commission. She was truly a respected historian, but became a good friend. Her research in genealogy was a common interest for us and so it's hard to say good-bye. Rest in peace, Deb. I have good memories of sharing history. ”
