Virginia Langbein, age 89 of Wall Lake, IA, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 2, 2020, at Twilight Acres in Wall Lake. Virginia May Fertig was born on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1931, the daughter of LaVern and Vera (Worden) Fertig in Odebolt, IA. Virginia was a life-long member of Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake where she was both baptized and confirmed.

Virginia attended country school in Wall Lake and graduated from Wall Lake High School with the class of 1948. She attended Buena Vista College for teaching and went on to teach country school and eventually, at Wall Lake Elementary School.

On December 28, 1950, Virginia married Robert Langbein at Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake. This union was blessed with three children: Dennis, David, and Dawn. They raised their family on a farm outside of Wall Lake. Virginia taught country school until she and Bob started a family, she then remained at home for several years to raise her children. When she decided to start teaching again, she taught at St. Martins in Odebolt and then at Wall Lake Elementary and while doing so, continued her education at Buena Vista College as she hadn’t received her full teaching degree when she attended the first time. Virginia was the kind of teacher that students remembered. She had such a great impact on so many.  “One of her goals was trying to help her students succeed.  She was always standing beside them with encouragement and incentives to achieve this goal.”

She was very active in her church as a Sunday School teacher and member of Daughters of Peace.  Her faith was very important to her and it showed by the great example she set for her family and friends by allowing her faith to lead her in all she did throughout her life.

Virginia was a great cook and loved cooking for others. She also enjoyed playing cards with her neighborhood ladies, Town and Country Card Club.  Spending time with her family though, was her highest priority and brought her the greatest joy. She will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, David Langbein of Wall Lake, IA, and Dawn Dorman of Sioux Falls, SD; grandson Dylan Dorman of Sioux Falls, SD; sister-in-law Mary Fertig of Wall Lake, IA; many extended family members and friends.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; son Dennis; brothers Bernie Fertig and Arnold Fertig; and son-in-law William Dorman.

“My Dad Gerald Schluter enjoyed keeping in touch with his former teacher Mrs. Langbein. He spoke very highly of her and her positive impact on his life. I remember how she always said hi to me at Peace Lutheran when I visited from Virginia and she would tell me how smart my Dad was. She was a kind, caring soul. My prayers to your family.”
