Joanne Estelle Shatto, age 90 of Early, IA, passed away on Monday, November 4, 2019, at her home in Early. Joanne was born at home on November 15, 1928, in Early, IA, to Martin and Anna (Ungrue) Pluth. She was baptized at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early on November 25, 1928, by Father Dalhoff. She made her first Communion on May 30, 1935, and was confirmed on May 19, 1938, by Bishop Edmond Heelan. She attended Sacred Heart School through the 8th grade and graduated in 1946 from Early Consolidated High School. Joanne attended an extension of Iowa State Teachers College in Carroll and taught one year in a country school near Auburn.
In 1950 she attended an Airline School in Kansas City and went to work for Delta Airlines in Atlanta, GA, for three years. Homesickness brought her back to Early where she worked as a waitress before working for Central Telephone Company in Fairmont, MN, as a telephone operator for two years. She moved to St. Cloud, MN, and worked for the St. Cloud School as a receptionist. In 1964, she and her husband Dean Shatto moved to Storm Lake and after their divorce Joanne went to work as a grocery checker for 22 years first at the Whole Sale Market for 9 years, then at Fareway for 13 years, retiring in 1992. Joanne moved to Early in 1994.
Joanne was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she served as a lector for 12 years and set up mass for 12 years. She enjoyed reading and working crossword puzzles and many sports including: water skiing, hunting, fishing, trap shooting, golf, camping, and snowmobiling.
Joanne was preceded in death by her father Martin in 1952; mother Anna in 1971; eight brothers: Melvin, Clarence, Gerald, Lando, Bernard, Albin, William, and Joseph; sister Dolores; three nephews: Kelvin Pluth, Valgene Pluth, and Bernard Pluth, Jr; niece Ellen Wilson; five sisters-in-law: and one brother-in-law.
Those left to cherish her memory are her three sisters-in-law: Helen, Coleen, and Nancy Pluth; cousins Joe Puetz and Jean Liske; 40 nieces and nephews; many extended family and friends.
