Marie Blessington, age 90 of Lake View, IA, formerly of Sac City, IA, passed away on Monday, September 30, 2019, at Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View. Marie Velma Hott was born on October 25, 1928, in Sac City to parents Chester and Cora (Stout) Hott. She grew up in Sac City where she attended school and graduated from Sac City High School with the Class of 1946. Marie was baptized as an infant and confirmed as a young adult. She was currently a member of Lakes United Methodist Church in Lake View.
On January 27, 1947, Marie was united in marriage to LeRoy “Lee” Blessington. They made their home in Sac City and were the parents to three children: Lyle, Sally and Donna. The couple owned and operated Blessington Service, where Marie was the bookkeeper and helped with body work on cars.
Outside of working at the station they owned for fourteen years, Marie was an amazing homemaker. The kids would often come home from school to find that Marie had made her amazing cream puffs. She loved any and all time spent with her family and eventually grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even five great-great-grandchildren. She had a few hobbies she enjoyed that included coin collecting, camping and fishing, and going to dances. Marie and Lee were outstanding polka dancers and attended many polka festivals. Their home’s finished basement was a gathering place for family and friends who liked to play pool, listen to music on the jukebox, and socialize. The family enjoyed vacations to the Black Hills many times and to Arizona, visiting all of the states in between.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Sally Witte of Des Moines, IA, and Donna Schwanz (special friend Henry Horst) of Lake View, IA; grandchildren: Kristie (Grant) LoPresti, Tamara (Chris) Funkhouser, Michelle Hoogendorn, LeRoy Blessington, Jason (Julie) Witte, Sarah Witte, Nathan (Lindsay) Witte, Chad Schwanz, Casey (Jaime) Schwanz, and Julie (John) Brincks; sixteen great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; many extended family members and friends.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Blessington; son Lyle Blessington, daughter-in-law Jeri Blessington; son-in-law Darwyn Witte; parents Chester and Cora Hott; brothers Phillip Hott and Vern Hott; and sister Barbara Peters.
