William “Bill” Manthe, age 87 of Lake View, IA, passed away on Thursday, July 18, 2019, at his home in rural Lake View. William George Manthe, Jr. was born on April 21, 1932, to parents William Sr. and Louise (Haupt) Manthe in Atchison, KS. Bill was baptized at the age of twelve at the First Congregational Church in Lake View. He and his ten siblings grew up in Lake View where he attended Viola #2 Country School. In his later teen years, Bill met Josephine Evans who would later become his wife, while detasseling corn one summer. Bill was a star tackle on the high school footbal team and he graduated from Lake View High School with the Class of 1950.
On August 31, 1952, Bill married the love of his life, Josephine “Jo” Evans, in Lake View at the First Congregational Church. Two and a half months later, Bill was inducted into the United States Army. He served for two years and was ranked Corporal before being honorably discharged in 1954. Bill and Jo were blessed with five children: Linda, Chris, Ellen, Carolyn and Bruce. They lived on the farm where work could always be found but a lot of fun was had.
Bill was a farmer through and through. He farmed the land with pride and was passionate about the cattle. When he wasn’t farming the land or tending to his livestock, you could find him restoring old ‘finds’, especially old tractors…this brought him great joy. He gained a lot of experience growing up with a father who was a blacksmith. Bill worked wonders with metal and could make just about anything anyone would want or need out of it, including farm equipment.
Bill was a 50+ year member of the local Masons, served as an elder at his church, was a member of the Eilert-Auen American Legion Post No. 133, and was a member of the Old Iron Club. He loved all things tractor related and built/restored several during his lifetime.
Once the kids were raised and off on their own, Bill and Jo found time to travel to several states across the United States to visit relatives. As grandkids came, he could be found entertaining them on the farm. All of the grandkids loved rides with grandpa Bill on the gator. Fond memories of playing in Indian Creek just down the road from the farm along with everyone gathering to clean sweet corn will forever remain with them. Bill had a genuine love for his family. His warm heart and big smile will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Left to cherish Bill’s memory include his wife of 66 years, Jo Manthe of Lake View, IA; children: Linda Wolfe of Des Moines, IA, Chris (Elaine) Manthe of Madrid, IA, Ellen (Jeff) Frank of Auburn, IA, Carolyn Sexton of Decorah, IA, and Bruce Manthe of Merrill, IA; grandchildren: Terri Jo Nuechterlein, C.J. Manthe, Brooke (Nick) Schaffer, Daniel (Misty) Frank, Mitch (Sophie) Frank, Shane (Alison) Evans, Jesse (Nichole) Evans, David (Jaclyn) Sexton, Ben Sexton, Brette (Tyler) Feldhacker, and Nick Manthe; great grandchildren: Lily, Brooks, Minnie, Kylie, Samuel, Aaron, Brooke, Lily, Abigail, Ziva, Nicholas, Kaelyn, and Sloane; great-great grandchild Brynlee; sisters: Eileen Quinley of KS, Edna (Norman) Moore of CA, Pauline (Dale) Peyton of TX, and Freda (Dale) Meyer of Schaller, IA; sister-in-law Patricia Johnson of FL; many extended family members and friends.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William Sr. and Louise Manthe; parents-in-law Clifford and Mary Evans; infant sister Maxine Manthe; sisters: Catherine (Alva) Jones, Mary (Max) Lingenfelser, Emmagene (Jack) Darrow, and Rose (Bud) Clark; brother George (Stella) Manthe; brothers-in-law: Jay Jones, Vernon Quinley, Russ Johnson, and Larry Glass; grandson Jon Frank; four nephews and one niece.

Bill's family has requested that all memorials be directed to the American Legion in Lake View, IA, in his memory.
