Sherry Ann Helmbrecht, age 60, originally from Lytton, IA, (formerly of Abilene, TX, and Spring Hill, TN) passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 25, 2018, in Sioux City, IA. Sherry was born on July 14, 1958, to parents Ronald and Elsie (Scheffler) Helmbrecht in Sac City, IA. She was baptized and confirmed at Emanuel-St. John Lutheran Church in Lytton, IA. Sherry grew up on the family farm with her parents and three siblings, Kim, Maryl and Tim and went to Lytton Community School, graduating with the class of 1976.

Sherry attended Morningside College in Sioux City, IA, obtaining her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.  After graduation, she worked as a kidney transplant nurse at the University of Iowa Hospital. A few years later, Sherry moved to Abilene, TX, and worked for Hendrick Health System where she pioneered combining technology and nursing. After furthering her education with an MBA from Hardin-Simmons University, Sherry moved to Nashville, TN. She worked for Community Health Systems improving patient care through the use of technology in hospitals across the United States.

Music and traveling were a big part of Sherry’s life. She loved singing and performing with the Abilene Classical Chorus - singing at Carnegie Hall as well as in several castles in Scotland. She also sang with her church choir. Sherry’s travels included places such as Scotland, Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, Spain, Austria, Italy, Greece, Ethiopia, Puerto Rico and many sites across the United States. Her photos and stories of these adventures were amazing, but no place was more dear to her heart than the family farm.

The importance of family was foremost in Sherry's heart. Memories of Sunday dinners with her cousins, her attendance at baptisms, confirmations, graduations, weddings and holidays will remain near and dear to the hearts of all of her loved ones.

Sherry was a kind, caring, and compassionate person, making many friends during her lifetime. She was a great conversationalist. Her life was always an adventure, which of course meant she had some pretty great stories to tell. Her smile brightened the room and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her siblings: Kimberly (Kenneth) Lager of Bedford, IA, Maryl (Tom) Sponder of Sioux City, IA ,and Timothy (Kim) Helmbrecht of Ankeny, IA; nieces and nephews: Kurt (Janae) Lager, Kyle Lager, Devyn Sponder, David Sponder, Sarah Sponder, Tiffany (Kevin) Voge and children Adam, Jason, and Kiah, Austin (Ashley) Helmbrecht, Gabrielle (Dillon Hauser) Helmbrecht and Arianna Helmbrecht; many extended family members and friends. Sherry was preceded in death by her parents, Ronald and Elsie Helmbrecht.

“I'm so very sorry to hear of Sherry's passing. It sounds like she lived a full and interesting life, my memories of her from our Lytton High School days was that she was always a good person. She lived a full life and gave a lot back to her profession and her community. My sincere sympathy to the family. ”

“I was so blessed to have been friends with Sherry for over 25 years. My heart is sad, but I was fortunate to have been on several travel adventures with her, and for the past few days I’ve been reliving some of our favorite times and laughing all over again. Like the time we were showering in individual stalls in a hostel in Poland, when someone else came in to another stall, began to shower, and said “good morning” in a deep, male voice. We were horrified that a man was in the women’s showers, until later that day when we figured out that WE were actually in the men’s showers. Or the time Sherry purchased crystal “jewelry holders” in Bratislava as gifts for family, only to find out that they were actually ash trays, and no one in the family smoked! Sherry sang at my wedding, we attended her graduation ceremony for her master’s and we swapped stories about our crazy, fun, and fantastic families. Sherry loved her family and friends with all her heart. She was wonderful, and her easy smile and fun-loving nature will be missed, but we are all better for having known her. ”

“I have very fond memories of my cousins, Kim & Sherry, along with Betty & myself, playing board games at the kitchen table on the farm. I think Kay and Maryl were always playing dolls upstairs and Tim was playing with the little boy toys.

Thank you for Sherry's wonderful obituary. Always remember that Sherry was covered in baptismal grace unto death to live with Him forever in the resurrection! God's peace & comfort be with you.”

“ Sherry and I became friends in Abilene, TX. She embraced my family and we loved spending time with her. We would play golf at a lighted par 3 golf course after work, attended plays at the local universities and just hang out. Sherry and I took a road trip to Savannah, GA, when she lived in Nashville, and we talked and laughed during the whole trip. My family loved her life stories. We will miss you dear friend. Judy Vanderheiden, (daughters) Nancy Luna and Carolyn Vahjen.”

“Sherry, my husband Larry, and I attended Grace Lutheran Church in Abilene when Sherry lived in Abilene. She was a good friend to us both. Sherry was so much fun to be with! She showed us her adventurous spirit such as going on a rattlesnake hunt in Sweetwater, buying in-line skates, and painting her dining area "eggplant" purple! She was so very thoughtful and generous. We have several beautiful gifts, particularly dishes, she has given us. Sherry had a beautiful voice and we were thrilled to have her sing at our wedding 26 years ago! She was so proud of her family and being from Iowa. She often shared food from her family like pork and pastries that she brought back to Abilene after being with her family. We have so many happy "Sherry memories!" We thank God Sherry was in our lives. We feel very blessed having her as a friend. May you receive comfort and strength during this difficult time.”

My prayers are with her family as they mourn and rejoice in her memory. I hope the table we delivered can remain in their family and be a small piece of Sherry they can carry with them. My God comfort you at this difficult time. ”

“Dear Friend, so glad you were able to visit the farm and be with your family. I know how much you loved all of them; I so enjoyed the stories of the nieces and nephews and all the rest of the family. P.S. My favorite story is the flat tire the "girls" had and how the "boys" drove right by :)
No pain now, please rest peacefully. I will see you on the other side; we'll go for dinner!
My most profound thoughts and wishes for peace to all the family, whom Sherry loved without measure.

“I worked with Sherry for 7 years at CHS. We were on the same team when I started and I could not have survived that first year without her assistance, humor, support and knowledge. I loved to listen to her stories. She certainly knew how to captivate an audience!! Sherry always had a kind word and a smile for me whenever I saw her. She had a gentle spirit that was peppered with just the right amount of sarcasm; such a quick wit!! She continued to graciously assist whenever I asked and did the same for everyone. She was a bright light in a sometimes very dark world and she will be missed greatly!!!
My deepest sympathy to the family!!!
Rest easy, my dear friend!!!!”

“I didn’t get to work directly with Sherry prior to going remote but I knew her because of her catching smile. She walked the 4th floor with the biggest smile and always asked me how I was doing in the kitchen area. She had such a warm and kind and funny.. personality. She was that person you met and wanted to get closer to and you wished you felt just like her at the office– always happy!

I remember asking a co-worker about her one day because I had not seen her smile in a while and they told me about her illness… it wasn’t long after that she came back to the office with an even bigger smile.

My point is… Sherry Helmbrecht impacted people she didn’t even know, she was a breath of fresh air to everyone she walked by. Her presence truly touched everyone around her.

We don’t always remember days, we remember moments - Sherry gave us many moments and smiles to remember forever.

Her family, friends & co-workers are in my prayers.”

“Sherry and I only ever spoke on the phone, but that was a fairly common occurrence. She was always pleasant, always trying to make my job easier and always willing to help as much as possible with the issue at hand. Patients come first, and that was her goal.”

“I've worked with Sherry here and there over the years and even from a relative distance it was clear to me what a kindhearted and gracious person she was. I never knew what a difficult fight she was enduring because she was always so positive. Every time we'd pass in the elevator she'd give me a smile as we talked. I'm very sorry to hear about her passing. We've really lost a wonderful person in Sherry.”
