VIrginia Louise Wunschel, age 98, formerly of Early, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, June 26, 2018, at John Knox Village, a Retirement and Assisted Living Facility, her home, in Weslaco, Texas.
She was born on June 8, 1920, in Early, Iowa, to Henry P. Schramm and Maria Louise Stephan. She was baptized on July 25, 1920, and confirmed on March 25, 1934, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Odebolt, IA. She grew up on a farm four miles south of Early which was homesteaded by her Grandpa and Grandma Stephan. She graduated from Early Consolidated High School in 1938 and lived her whole life in Early until moving to Texas 24 years ago.
On June 8, 1939, Virginia married Merle Edward Wunschel in the Lutheran Church at Lake View, Iowa. They made their home on the family farm four miles south of Early where they raised five children. After Merle retired from farming they spent their winters in Florida. She liked working outside and helping with the farm work while still preparing large meals for her family. She enjoyed being a Sunday school teacher at Peace Lutheran in Wall Lake (1962-1969). She also enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening, and reading. Virginia liked to travel and take pictures. She did a lot of genealogy research on her trips.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Merle; daughter, Kay Eldridge; granddaughter, Vicky (Johnson) Keeth; son-in-law Noel Brown; two sisters: Ottelia Freier and Clara Hohlweck; and brother, Ernest Schramm.
Virginia is survived by her children: Joan Johnson (Johnny) League City, Texas; Susan Brown, (late Noel Brown) Des Moines, Washington; Douglas Wunschel (Tammy) Early, Iowa; Dennis Wunschel (Ernestine) Early, Iowa; and son-in-law Michael Eldridge (late Kay Eldridge) Evansdale, Iowa. Other survivors include: 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great grandchildren; sister in-law Lois Wunschel; and numerous nieces and nephews.
