Hetty McMullen

HettyHetty McMullen, 76, of Sac City went to be with the Lord on February 3, 2008. Hetty was born in Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire, England on March 29, 1931 to Welburn and Ivy Furness Wilkinson. She was educated in Cleckheaton Primary, Grammar and Secondary schools and received her teaching degree from Liecester House in Leeds, England.

Hetty was a consummate teacher whose career spanned 45 years in England, Australia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Canada and The United States.

Hetty was united in marriage to Jerry McMullen on March 25, 1967 in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada.

Hetty enjoyed singing, dancing, painting, reading, Bible study, spending time with her family and traveling. No matter where Hetty’s travels landed her she was always involved in the life of the community, her church, and the lives of others. The clubs and activities Hetty was involved in are too numerous to mention. Hetty was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Sac City. Hetty was driven by her faith in God and her goodwill toward others. By her very nature Hetty exemplified the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. There is no way to gauge Hetty’s selflessness, no way to calculate how many lives were touched by her compassion. Hetty was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her passing will be deeply mourned by her family as well as all those who were close to her.

Hetty was preceded in death by her mother, Ivy; her father, Welburn; her stepmother, Ida; and two brothers Allen and John Wilkinson.

Hetty is survived by her husband, Jerry, of Sac City; daughter and son-in-law Becky and Scott Straley of Mountain Home, Idaho; son Ian McMullen of Nevada, Iowa; son Adrian McMullen of Louisville, Kentucky; grandsons Stephen and Reece Straley of Mountain Home, Idaho; granddaughters Cassandra, Madeline and Victoria McMullen of Nevada, Iowa; brother and sister-in-law Gordon and Jean Wilkinson of Cleckheaton, England; sister and brother-in-law Jackie and Norm Grimmer of Ararat, Australia; and sister Sue Mason of Melbourne, Australia; in-laws Jack and Jane McMullen of Northwood, Iowa and Jim McMullen of Burt, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a memorial service celebrating Hetty’s life later this spring.  Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City is in charge of arrangements.
