Glen E. Johnson

Glen JohnsonGlen E. Johnson, age 87, of McAllen, Texas, formerly of Sac City, passed away on January 9, 2008, at Comfort House in McAllen.

Glen was born on February 19, 1920, in Milford, Iowa, to C. R. and Ellen (Peterson) Johnson. He graduated from Sac City High School in 1940 and attended Drake University in Des Moines for one year. While he was in school, Glen was active in band, playing the trumpet, track and Thespian Society.

On January 3, 1942, Glen was inducted into the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. His basic training was at Camp Roberts, CA. He was assigned to Headquarters Battery, 7th Infantry Division Artillery at Camp San Luis Obispo, CA. He was a non-commissioned supply officer in Division Artillery Headquarters. Combat assignments included the Aleutian Islands, Kwajalien in the Marshall Islands, Leyte in the Philippine Islands and Okinawa. Awards include the Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Service during the Kwajalien Campaign, the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with four Bronze Stars, the World War II Victory Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. Glen was honorably discharged October 16, 1945, at Ft. Carson, CO. As a reservist in the U.S. Army, Glen was recalled to active duty in December of 1950 during the Korean Conflict. He was assigned to the 19th Infantry Regiment of the 24th Infantry Division. He was awarded the Korean Campaign Ribbon with one Bronze Star and was honorably discharged in October 1951.

Glen was united in marriage on April 21, 1946, to Harriet Mae Ashbaugh. Five children blessed this union: Ernest Q. (Patricia), Minneapolis, MN; Steven C. (Susan), Richmond, VA; Raymond E. (Ursula), Solingen, Germany; Barbara J. Tripp (Michael), Alexandria, MN; and Larry D. (Kim), Mound, MN. They have fourteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A brother, Herbert O. Johnson, three half-brothers, and two half-sisters preceded him in death.

Glen farmed the Indian Hill Dairy Farm west of Sac City, Iowa, for three years after his discharge from the U.S. Army. He then joined Midwest Memorial Gardens and moved to Ottumwa, IA, Aurora, IL and Spencer, IA before being recalled into military service for the Korean Conflict in 1950. Upon his return to the States, he was made General Manager for Midwest Memorial Gardens and traveled to several states in his Stinson 4-seater airplane. He held a commercial pilots’ license and was a member of the Airplane Pilots’ Association. He spent two years in Moorhead, MN as manager of the Fargo, ND Memorial Garden Cemetery. Glen and his family then moved to Long Lake, MN in 1965 where he became Officer Manager for McQuay-Perfex, Inc. He remained there until his retirement in February 1982. Upon retirement he remodeled his lake home at Pequot Lakes, MN where Glen and his family spent many fun times since 1966. In 1984 he bought a home in McAllen, TX and began spending winters there. Eight years later they became Texas residents and moved to Alamo Country Club. They continued to spend 4-8 months each year at their lake home in Pequot Lakes, MN.

Glen has been a member of the Presbyterian Church in Sac City, Cedar Falls, Moorhead, MN, Long Lake, MN and McAllen, TX. He served as an Elder in Calvin Presbyterian Church in Long Lake, MN. Glen was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star in Wayzata, MN, the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Southern Jurisdiction, Valley of Minneapolis, MN the Zuhrah Minnetonka Shrine Club in Minnetonka, MN and the Al Amin Shrine Club in McAllen, TX. Glen has been a continuous member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars since his discharge in 1945.

Fourteen grandchildren survive Glen: Sandy, David and Tom Johnson; Tim, Dan (Lesley) Johnson; Elisabeth (fiancée Jan), Robert, Frederick and Victoria Ohla; Alisa (Derek) Huebsch, Ryan and Michael (fiancée Danielle) Tripp; and Kristin and Eric Johnson; two great-grandchildren: Dan Johnson, Jr. and Briella Huebsch; and many extended family members.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, January 16th, at the First Presbyterian Church in Sac City with Rev. Matt Milligan and Rev. John Peterson officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home. Military graveside rites will be performed by the V.F.W. Post No. 590 and American Legion Cantigny Post No. 195 of Sac City.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
