Elmer E. Wollesen

Elmer Edward Wollesen, 92, of Wall Lake, Iowa, passed away on March 29, 2008, at Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 2nd at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Wall Lake. Burial is at Ferguson Cemetery in Lake View under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 4:00-8:00 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home in Wall Lake.

Elmer was born November 22, 1915, in Wall Lake the son of William and Pauline (Rix) Wollesen. Elmer was raised in Wall Lake graduating from Wall Lake High School in 1934 where he excelled in high school sports while participating in football, basketball, and baseball. After high school Elmer was employed with the Chicago and North Western Railway Company and enjoyed playing baseball for the Wall Lake town team as their pitcher.

Elmer married Matie H. Higgins on June 10, 1939. He worked for the Pop Corn Company in Wall Lake until 1944 when he was drafted into the Army, serving in the Philippines and Japan until 1946. In 1952 he went to work for Hallet Construction Company until his retirement in 1982.

Elmer loved to watch Wall Lake High School’s athletic teams and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife Matie and their son Sherman and his wife Susan of Lawton, Iowa.  He has four grandchildren: Kimberly and Randy Waagmeester of Rock Rapids, Iowa; Kirsten Wollesen of Okoboji, Iowa; Erika and Dr. John Leupold of Spirit Lake, Iowa; and William Wollesen of Omaha, Nebraska.  There are four great-grandchildren: Tyler, Victoria, Whitney, and Veronica all of Rock Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his brother Harold Wollesen, his sister Evelyn Wollesen and granddaughter Julie Jensen Higgins Wollesen.
