Warren H. Bohnenkamp

He loved his life…He loved his family…..and he loved the lake….was a die-hard Cubs fan and a proud member of the Democratic Party. Warren’s life was a great ride and he had no regrets. He left this world on August 21, 2007. He will be lovingly missed by his wife Dorothy, daughter Pazzi, son Jeff, daughter–in-law Mary Ann, and grandchildren Angela, Jeffry, Joseph, and Elizabeth.

Warren Herman Bohnenkamp was born July 1, 1921, to Julius and Marie Fee Bohnenkamp in Breda, Iowa. He was an only child, having lost a brother Homer to pneumonia and a sister Anna at birth. His elementary and high school education was spent at St. Bernard Catholic Schools in Breda, Iowa, where he lived with his parents until his military service. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Breda.

He served in the Marine Corps with MABS 1 in Guadalcanal in WWII. He was honorably discharged with a rank of Staff Sergeant in 1945. The men he served with held a yearly reunion which he attended regularly until this year.

Shortly after this he met the love of his life, Dorothy Ferrin Bohnenkamp, and they were married on February 13, 1946, at St. Columbkills Catholic Church in Churdan, Iowa. They then lived for a short time in Cincinnati, Ohio, where Warren completed his studies as a funeral director at the College of Mortuary Science while Dorothy worked as an RN in Pediatric Research at the Children’s Hospital.

In 1954, they moved to Lake View where he was employed by Farber & Otteman Funeral Homes. He worked there until 1960 when he changed careers and became a licensed insurance and real estate employee of Kettering Insurance. He later became a partner in that business renamed Kettering and Bohnenkamp Insurance and Real Estate. He retired from that business in 1988.

He served as lector, Eucharist minister, altar server, usher, choir member, Finance Council member, CYO instructor, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wall Lake.

He had a life-long passion for Black Hawk Lake and the Lake View community. He served on the City Council and as Mayor Pro Tem when called upon, was a member of the Lions Club, Lake View Commercial Club, American Legion, and was a Boy Scout leader for many years. His county and state affiliations were with the Easter Seal Society and Camp Sunnyside for 20 years, East Howard Activity Center, and Sac County Outreach. He was one of the founding members of the Spring Lake Golf and Country Club. His most recent accomplishment was his tireless work for the Black Hawk Lake Development and Dredging Project.

His many interests and hobbies included fishing off his dock, watching his wood ducks, golfing, dancing with Dorothy, bridge games, traveling the 50 states, politics, and his ever entertaining Cubs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one sister. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy, his daughter, Pazzi of Altadena, California, his son, Jeff (Mary Ann) of Spencer, and his grandchildren, Angela of Brooklyn, New York, Jeff of Spencer, Joseph of Spencer, and Elizabeth of Vermillion, South Dakota.

Services are as follows: Visitation at Lake View Funeral Home on Thursday, August 23, 5:00-8:00 p.m. with a 7:30 prayer service. Funeral services will be at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wall Lake at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 24th, with military rites and burial at the Wall Lake Cemetery. Reception will follow at the Lake View Legion Hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to his many favorite charities and organizations.
