Melvin was born on October 28, 1916, on a farm south of Wall Lake, the son of Hannas J. and Amanda (Nobiling) Bahr. He grew up on the farm and graduated from country school. His love for farming grew while helping his parents on the farm.

On April 30, 1940, Melvin was united in marriage to Verna M. Gosch. They farmed northwest of Wall Lake, where they raised their children: Don, Helen, and Julie. Farming was Melvin’s life, but his family was his love. He cherished his wife and children, and took great pride in watching his children grow and have families of their own.
