Genevieve C. Godbersen
Genevieve Charlotte Godbersen, age 91, of Odebolt, Iowa, passed
away on Friday, August 17, 2007, at the Odebolt Nursing and Rehab
Center in Odebolt.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 20th,
at 10:30 a.m., at the Presbyterian Church in Odebolt with Rev. Mark Volkers
officiating. Burial will be at the Odebolt Cemetery under the direction
of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.
Visitation is from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Sunday, August
19th, at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Odebolt.
Gen was born on March 31, 1916, in Odebolt, Iowa,
the daughter of Gustav J. and Eva Elizabeth (Luft) Freese. She graduated
from Odebolt High School in 1934, with a class of 36 students.
Gen worked at the Adam’s Ranch for three years
as a maid. On February 17, 1937, she was united in marriage to Harry
Albert Godbersen. They made their home on the Godbersen family farm near
Odebolt, in Richland Township. This union was blessed with five children:
Janice, Ethel, James, Arlene (who died two months after her birth), and Renae.
Gen became a member of the Presbyterian Church in
Odebolt in 1921. She was the longest and oldest church member to date. Through
the years she taught Sunday School, daily vacation Bible School, sang in the
church choir, was church deacon, and a member of the Presbyterian Women.
Gen and Harry loved to square dance and play cards. She
enjoyed quilting and visiting with people, working in her garden, canning,
and sharing her produce with others. She also enjoyed playing BINGO with
her friends at Odebolt Nursing and Rehab Center.
Survivors include her children: Ethel (Gene) Subbert
of Scranton, IA; James Godbersen and fiancé Carla Marsh of Mapleton,
IA; and Renae Godbersen of Waukee, IA; grandchildren: Scott (Kelly) Groe of
Cedar Rapids, IA; Barry (Carmen) Groe of Hibbing, MN; Sheila Subbert of Exira,
IA; Lonn and Lori Subbert of Milford, IA; Julie and Rob Litzenberger of Shakopee,
MN; Jamie (Elisa) Godbersen of Castle Rock, CO; Joe Godbersen of Sioux City,
IA; and Jeff Godbersen of Gillette, WY; four great-grandchildren; and many
extended family members.
Gen was preceded in death by her parents; husband,
Harry on June 16, 2006; two daughters: Arlene Godbersen and Janice Groe; granddaughter,
Pamela Groe; her sisters: Hazel Hammond, Drucilla Reuber, Irene Gronemeyer,
Anna Freese; and brothers: Leslie “Leb” Freese and Otto Freese.
