Glen L. Duncan

Glen Lester Duncan, age 89, of Sac City, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, May 27, 2007, at Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 31st, at the United Methodist Church is Sac City with Pastor Vicki Fisher officiating and special music provided by Barb Bloes and Lorna Youll. The Sac City Fire Department will form an honor guard and lead the procession to Oakland Cemetery in Sac City with military graveside rites performed by the V.F.W. Post No. 590 & American Legion Cantigny Post No. 195 of Sac City.

Visitation is from 5:00-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 30th at the funeral home. Masonic services will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Glen was born on December 29, 1917, in Lagrange Township, Missouri Valley, Iowa, the son of Charles and Mamie (Skakson) Duncan. He attended Missouri Valley Schools. Glen was proud to have served in the United States Marine Corps. He was inducted on July 27, 1942, serving during World War II, earning the rank of Technical Sergeant upon completion of his duty on November 15, 1945.

He met the love of his life and was united in marriage at Long Beach, California, on December 18, 1943, to Emma Friesner. This union was blessed with four children: Glenda, Dennis, Douglas, and Dale. They made their home in Sac City where Glen worked as a lineman for the power company (I.P.S.) for 27 years.

Glen was a devoted husband, father, brother and friend. In later years his grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought him great joy. He enjoyed golfing, working in his garden, and fishing. He was highly respected in the community, having served on the City Council and as Mayor of Sac City for many years, a volunteer for the Sac City Fire Department since 1953, member of the V. F. W. and American Legion, Secretary of the Occidental Masonic Lodge, and member of the Abu Bekr Shrine. He also served on the 911 Board, Highway 20 Association, Loring Hospital Auxiliary, and Museum Auxiliary. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church.

Those thankful for having shared in Glen’s life include his loving wife of 63 years, Emma Duncan of Sac City; his daughter and her husband, Glenda and Bob Olerich of West Des Moines, Iowa; three sons and their wives: Dennis and Jean of Granger, Iowa, Doug and Kathy of Spencer, Iowa, and Dale and Sue of Sac City; five grandchildren: Todd (Christeen) Olerich of St. Charles, Iowa, Jess (Carrie) Reiling of Dallas Center, Iowa, Travis (Joni) Reiling of Dayton, Iowa, Jennifer Olerich of West Des Moines, and Jill (David) Klaver of Des Moines; and seven great-grandchildren: Brody, Macee, Morgan, Cole, Keira, Celia, and Keegan. Other survivors include his two brothers and their wives, Bill and Bev Duncan of Sac City and Don and Evelyn Duncan of Rockwell City; three sisters: Joan Krause of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Shirley Willcutt of Denver, Colorado, and Ellen Bauer and husband Garth of Humboldt, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, extended family members and a host of friends. He will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter Kim Olerich; sister Virginia Mandernach; and brother Gene Duncan.
