Bernice L. Reida

Bernice Lyman Reida was born March 15, 1915, to George Lyman and Maude Keysor Lyman in Brooklyn, Iowa.  She was married to Truman Reida on September 26, 1934.

She graduated from Brooklyn High School, Buena Vista College, and received her Master’s Degree in History from the University of South Dakota.  Bernice taught history at Sac City High School and Buena Vista College.  During her teaching career she was active in professional organizations, was on the Board of Directors of the Iowa Education Association and represented Iowa on the board of the National Education Association.

She was a member of Lakes United Methodist Church, PEO Chapter BI, Fine Arts Club, Lake View Historical Preservation Commission, Historical Society, Book Club, and a charter member of Plamor Bridge Club.  She was the author of several magazine and newspaper articles, co-author with Annabelle Irwin of four books based on Iowa history and sole author of the book Women Can Be Choosers.  Bernice was instrumental in getting the Stone Piers and statue of Chief Black Hawk on the National Register of Historic Sites.

Bernice passed away on Wednesday, September 19, 2007, at Loring Hospital in Sac City, Iowa.

Survivors include her son, Larry Reida and wife Mary of Waynesville, North Carolina; daughter, Linda Reida of Carroll, Iowa; along with two grandsons: Steven and Mark Reida; many nieces and nephews; and her cherished friends and neighbors, John and Rosemary Adair and their family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Truman on April 17, 1997; four sisters: Marie Hladky, Hazel Dolmage, Thelma Mohr, and Dorothy Heishman; and two brothers: Cecil and Cloyd Lyman.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, September 22nd, at Lakes United Methodist Church in Lake View with Rev. Mary Schultz officiating.  Burial will be at Ferguson Cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 4:00-7:00 p.m., on Friday at the funeral home in Lake View.
