Berenice E. Mack Berenice
Elaine (Herrig) Mack, age 85, of Wall Lake, Iowa, passed away on Monday,
July 16, 2007, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll, Iowa.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, July 20, 2007, at Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake with Pastor Roger Carlisle officiating. Burial will be at the Wall Lake Cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home. Visitation is from 4:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, July 19th at the funeral home in Wall Lake, where the family will be present from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Berenice was born on February 1, 1922, in Wall Lake, Iowa, the daughter of John and Christine (Wunschel) Herrig. She was baptized March 12, 1922, and confirmed June 27, 1937, at Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake where she remained a life-long member. She completed her formal education in 1939 at Wall Lake High School, and graduated from the American Institute of Business in Des Moines in 1940. On August 16, 1942, Berenice was united in marriage to Joseph L. Mack at Peace Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with five children: Marsha, Stephen, Shelton, Scott, and Michelle. They made their home in Wall Lake. J. L. enlisted in the service in August 1942 and was called to duty in February 1943. He was discharged in September 1945 and upon returning home, he and Berenice operated an appliance and gift store in Wall Lake. In 1946, the Macks started a trucking business and later bought Rohde Transfer with Berenice’s brother Orville Herrig, calling the business Mack & Herrig Trucking. The partnership later dissolved and the Mack Trucking business continued under the name Wall Lake Transfer. Berenice was an active member of the Peace Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. She was a member of Walther League, Ladies Aid, AAL, and Daughters of Peace, serving as President from 1989-1990. She served on the Community Chest Board and was a member of the Wall Lake Research Club. Employed as a secretary, Berenice worked at several businesses in Wall Lake including: Wall Lake Savings Bank, Popcorn Growers & Distributors, Wall Lake Post Office, Twilight Acres, Field Enterprises and Electrolux as well as the family business Wall Lake Transfer. When she wasn’t working she enjoyed reading, listening to big band music, painting, dancing, traveling and cards, especially bridge. She always had time for a game of cards, Dominoes, or Scrabble with the grandchildren or anyone else who would accept her challenge. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, and grandmother who cherished her family and loved their family get-togethers. She was very proud of all her grandchildren and was pleased to share their accomplishments and achievements with her friends. She will be missed by family and friends, and leaves many fond memories. Survivors include her children: Marsha (Glen) Boes of Norwalk, Iowa; Stephen (Mary Linda) Mack of Wall Lake; Shelton (Dianne) Mack of Mitchell, South Dakota; Scott Mack of Wall Lake; and Michelle (Michael) Hildreth of West Des Moines, Iowa; 11 grandchildren: Kimberly, Daniel, and Jason (Jennifer) Boes; Mary Beth (Dan) Blum, Christopher (Nicole) Mack, and Jonathan Mack; Wendi Henglefelt and Justin Mack; Sara (Olen) Hart; and Ryan and Taylor Hildreth; 11 great-grandchildren: Emma Pagano, River Boes, Miranda Knight, and Kenna Boes; Hunter, Merrin, and Ashton Blum, Dawson and Emersyn Mack; Madelynn Henglefelt; and Olivia Hart. Other survivors include her brother Warren (LaVon) Herrig of Fort Worth, Texas; sister-in-law Mary Herrig Becker of Wall Lake; eight nieces and nephews, cousins, and many friends. Berenice was preceded in death by her parents John and Christine Herrig; husband Joseph L. Mack; brother Orville Herrig; parents-in-law Joseph A. and Veda Mack; and sisters-in-law Mary Chambers and Helen Way. |
