Bev was born to Lueda (Davenport) and Harry Stokes on October 6, 1933, in Lake City, Iowa, following the birth of three older brothers. She graduated from Glidden Consolidated High School in 1951.

Following a short attendance at Northwestern Iowa University, Bev returned to Rockwell City to help take care of her two nephews, Dave and Gary Stokes, who lost their mom. She began working at the Rockwell City State Bank after her brother remarried.

Before getting married, Bev was baptized and became a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Lytton at the age of 21, in the spring of 1954.

It was on June 27, 1954, that Milet L. Carlson and Beverly Ann Stokes were joined in marriage at the Lytton First Presbyterian Church. Three girls were born into the family with each successive year, keeping Bev quite busy.

Bev’s devotion as a mother was seen through her activities of being a Camp Fire Girl leader, a Sunday school teacher and supporting her girls in their musical, sport, and academic opportunities. As the girls grew older, Bev began working at the Lytton Savings Bank and then later at the Sac City State Bank for over 20 years.

Bev was glad to retire to go camping/traveling with her husband, to assist in taking care of her grandson and to devote more time to her numerous hobbies of woodworking, knitting, crocheting, ceramic work and reading. She frequently made special items for her children, grandchildren, and for church bazaars at the Sac City First Presbyterian Church of which she was a member.

Bev was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Marvin Stokes. She leaves fond memories with her survivors: her husband, Milet, her children; Diane (Chuck) Sheppard of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Renee (Jeff) Kersey of Seville, Ohio, and Janice Carlson of Lytton, Iowa; her grandchildren: Milet (Anna) Kracht, Alisha and Jenna Kersey, Timothy, Nathan and Rachel Sheppard; her brothers: Melvin (Doris) Stokes of Lake City, Iowa, and Curt (Marie) Stokes of Glidden, Iowa; her sisters-in-law: Rosey Doner of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Dolores Carlson of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Sharon Carlson of Glidden, Iowa; many extended family members; and friends.
