Wilbur “Dean” Staton

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, December 4th, at Cory Grove Cemetery in Sac City with Rev. Sharla Hulsey officiating and a flag presentation by the Eilert-Auen American Legion Post No. 133 of Lake View. Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Lake View is in charge of arrangements.

There will be no visitation.

Wilbur “Dean” Staton, age 74, of Lake View, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, November 29, 2006, at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital in Lake City, Iowa. Dean was born on July 23, 1932, in Sac City, Iowa, the son of George W. and Florence (Manska) Staton. He received his education at Sac City High School.

Dean was inducted into the United States Navy on May 9, 1950, serving during the Korean War aboard the U.S.S. St. Paul, through July 17, 1953. He re-enlisted in the Navy on October 15, 1957, and served through October 5, 1963. While in the service, Dean was united in marriage to Shirley C. Mitchell on April 28, 1962, at her mother’s home in Michigan. To this union three daughters were born: Colleen, Linda, and Deana.

After serving his country, Dean worked at a window manufacturing company in Michigan. Dean and Shirley moved to Lake View in 1988 after retiring. He enjoyed the great outdoors, fishing, hunting, and camping with his family. He also liked to play cards and go bowling. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother, who loved to visit with family and friends and spend time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley of Lake View; daughters: Colleen Karstens and Steve Copeland of Arthur, Iowa, Linda Staton of Michigan, and Deana Miller of California; four grandchildren: Krystal Fraley, Kenneth Wiltse, Brandy Miller, and Summer Miller; and one great-granddaughter. Other survivors include his brother, Leo Staton and wife Shirley of Sac City; two sisters: JoAnn Vauble and husband LeRoy of Sac City and Marilyn Mentzer and husband Raymond of Early, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Rolland, Lee, and Clair Staton; and three sisters: Catherine Birt, Martha Breon, and Marjorie Hammer.
