Norm was born on August 4, 1915, in Sac City, the son of Clyde W. and Ethel R. (Hayden) Highland. He graduated from Sac City High School in 1933.
He was inducted into the United States Army in September 1942. After basic training in Hawaii and, later, in Australia, he took part in seven campaigns with the 34th Infantry, 24th Division. His combat experience included operations on New Guinea, Biak, Leyte, Luzon, Bataan, Corregidor and Mindanao. Among his awards were the Purple Heart, Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Presidential Citation, and Campaign Ribbons. After approximately three years, he was honorably discharged in October of 1945.
Norman was united in marriage to Alberta V. Brower on January 30, 1949, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. This union was blessed with four children: Carmen, Connie, Jan, and Kent. He was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church, a member of the V.F.W. Post No. 590, American Legion Cantigny Post No. 195 of Sac City, and the D.A.V.
Norman was a farmer. He spent many hours of his life sitting on a tractor seat or holding the handle of a hoe. Working with the soil and growing things were what he liked best. There will be no button weeds, thistles, cockle burrs, nor rocks in heaven if he has anything to say about it. Farming was his life but his love was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Norm will be missed dearly by his family and friends.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 57 years, Alberta; his children: Connie Keller and husband Jim of Des Moines, IA, Jan Clemsen and husband Brent of Maple Valley, WA, and Kent Highland and wife Kellie of Sac City, IA; eight grandchildren: Erin, Mitchell, Emily and Ann Keller, Katie and Leah Clemsen, and Jay and Jamie Highland; sister Dorothy Limbrecht of Wacon, IA; extended family members; and many friends.
Norm was preceded in death by his parents; brother Don Highland; sister Maurine Schnirring, and baby daughter Carmen.
