Marie G. Fertig

Marie G. Fertig, age 91, of Wall Lake, Iowa, passed away on July, 10, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa, as the result of a pedestrian-car accident.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, July 14th, at Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake with Pastor Roger Carlisle officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m., at Armstrong Grove Cemetery in Armstrong, Iowa, under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 5:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, July 13th, at the Farber & Otteman Funeral home in Wall Lake.

Marie G. England was born on May 3, 1915, in Rockwell City, Iowa, the daughter of John Albert and Lillie May (Mitchell) England. She attended K through 3rd grades at Rockwell City, and 3rd through 12th at Halfa, Iowa, graduating from Halfa in 1934. She was united in marriage to Ferd Lau on November 3, 1934, in Estherville, Iowa. This union was blessed with four children: Laurence, Betty, June, and Nancy. They made their home near Halfa. Marie was baptized in 1942 in Halfa and confirmed in 1952 at Estherville Lutheran Church. Marie moved to Wall Lake in 1963. Ferd passed away in 1983.

She was a loving wife and mother, providing a comfortable home with her special homemade touches. Marie loved quilting, crocheting, embroidering, sewing, and making stuffed animals. She also enjoyed being outdoors in her garden tending her flowers.

In 1960, Marie graduated from LPN training at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll, IA. She worked at St. Anthony’s Hospital, helping deliver and care for babies, including a set of triplets. On November 17, 1963, Marie was married to LaVern Fertig in Wall Lake. He passed away on February 27,1994.

She especially loved being with her family and her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her son Laurence (Linda) Lau of Brunswick, GA; stepsons Bernard (Mary) Fertig of Wall Lake, and Arnold Fertig of Pollock Pines, CA; her daughters: Betty McCart of Wall Lake and June Dodds of Toole, UT; stepdaughter Virginia Langbein of Wall Lake; nine grandchildren; seven step grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; eight step great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Hazel Hutchinson of Rockwell City, IA, sister-in-law Mandalin England; and many extended family members.

Marie was preceded in death by her daughter Nancy Lau; parents; husbands; three sisters: Viola Bigelow and husband Bill, Ollie Tapps and husband John, Ethel Hutchinson and husband Frank; brother-in-law Lloyd Hutchinson; four brothers: Otis England and wives Ruth and Edith, Jack England and wife Lydia, Lyle England, Roy England and wife Joyce; and great-granddaughter Jessica Hamilton.
