Herman Sonksen

Herman Jens John Sonksen, 91, of Lake View, formerly of Early, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, December 9, 2006, at Loring Hospital in Sac City from complications of a brain tumor.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, December 13th, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Lake View, Iowa, with Pastor James Travis officiating. Burial will be at the Manning Cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 4:00-8:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 12th, at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Lake View.

He was born on May 9, 1915, in Douglas Township, Audubon County, Iowa, the son of Jens and Dorthea (Asmus) Sonksen. He was baptized on May 26, 1915, and confirmed in Lincoln Township, Audubon, Iowa. Herman was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Lake View, Iowa.

On January 24, 1940, Herman was united in marriage with Gladys Bernice Asmus at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Lincoln Township, Audubon County. They farmed one year in Audubon County, then moved to a farm three miles out of Manning, farming there for 24 years. In 1965 they moved to town, where Herman began his own carpentry business. In November of 1972, they moved to Early, Iowa, with his carpentry crew. Herman sold his business to Early Builders in 1975 but continued to do carpentry work for several years. He then started his hobby of woodcarving.

Herman was preceded in death by his parents; wife Gladys; two brothers: Bernard and Jules Sonksen; two sisters: Christina Mohr and Jesse Pfannkuch, and grandson Lance Warnke.

Those left to mourn his passing include his four children: Vernon Sonksen and wife Krystal-Ane of San Diego, California; Joyce Warnke and husband Ronald of Lake View, Iowa; Donna Davis and husband Bill of Tucson, Arizona; and Debra Sonksen of Centennial, Colorado; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
