Opal Hansen

Funeral services for Opal Hansen will be held Thursday, December 22nd, 10:30 a.m., at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sac City under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home. Pastor Mark Thompson will officiate. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Sac City.

Visitation is from 4:00-7:00 pm on Wednesday, December 21st, at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.

Opal Esther Hansen was born on April 15, 1914, in Cook Township, Sac County, rural Odebolt, Iowa. She was the daughter of August C. and Elsie Kutz Hansen. She was one of four girls in the family. Opal’s parents brought her to the Lord when she was an infant. She was baptized May 14, 1914, in the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit. In her baptism God said, “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved. (Mark 16:16) Her baptism was celebrated in a country congregation, Immanuel Lutheran Church of Cook Township. Later as a teenager, Opal confirmed her faith in Jesus Christ and vowed lifelong allegiance to her Savior. God in his grace enabled Opal to keep her confirmation vow. Her confirmation verse was John 6:68 “Lord to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life.” Her confirmation was celebrated at Immanuel Lutheran Church on April 1, 1928.

Opal grew up during the hardscrabble years of the Great Depression. She graduated from Sac City High School. Opal has lived her entire life in Sac County. When needed she assisted her father with farm work and assisted her mother with gardening and household chores. She worked in the Sac City Public School lunchroom for many years.

She was superintendent of Immanuel Lutheran Sunday School for a number of years.

In 1957 Opal joined St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sac City. Through the years Opal served her Lord in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and was historian and served as LWML Zone Secretary. She tied quilts for Lutheran World Relief. and served as secretary for the local Aid Association for Lutherans Chapter.

Opal Hansen was a gentle woman, a humble person who was always there for people who needed help.

She loved flowers and gardening. She was a 50-year member of the Sac City Garden Club. Opal’s hobbies also included card playing, quilting, and needlecrafts.

She loved her church and was every-Sunday faithful at worship, Holy Communion, and Bible class.

God in His wisdom and grace called Opal out of this life to eternal life on Tuesday, December 20, 2005. She is survived by her sister, Betty Rude of Sioux City, Iowa, and a host of nieces and nephews. Her parents and sisters, Eleanor Bohen and Fern Rehder preceded her in death.
