Mary Johnson

Mary Henrietta Hoefling Johnson, 95, of Odebolt, Iowa, passed away on Monday, August 8, 2005, at the Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View. Mary Buehler was born on April 16, 1910, in Richland Township, Sac County, Iowa, the daughter of Sebastian V. and Delia B. Chandler Buehler. She was baptized and later confirmed on May 14, 1922, at the Richland German Methodist Church in Odebolt. Mary went to country school through eighth grade, graduated from Odebolt High School in 1927, and attended nurses school in Sioux City.

On January 1, 1931, Mary was united in marriage to Harold Hoefling at her parents home. They were blessed with three children: Lawrence, Marilyn and Donald. Harold passed away August 16, 1980. Mary found love again and married Raymond Johnson in 1981. He passed away April 5,1987.

Mary worked for many years as a nurse’s aide at the Odebolt Nursing Home. She will be remembered as a loving and caring mother and grandmother. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading, cooking, and raising flowers, especially African Violets. Her cat “Tigger” and dog “Brownie” were very special to her.

Survivors include her daughter, Marilyn Stork of Odebolt; son Donald Hoefling and his wife Roberta of Oto, IA; daughter-in-law Mary Hoefling of Murray, NE; step-daughter-in-law Julie Johnson of Davenport, IA; ten grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and many extended family members.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husbands: Harold Hoefling and Raymond Johnson; son Lawrence Hoefling; son-in-law Fred Stork; stepson Richard Johnson; granddaughters: Sally Kennedy and Dianna Schonts; great-grandson Dennis Stork; great-great grandchildren: Alex Schonts and Casey and Hannah Hoefling; and sisters: Ferne Johnson and Olive Bennum.

Memorial services for Mary will be held on Friday, August 12th, 2:00 p.m., at the United Methodist Church in Odebolt with Rev. Kathy Spracklin officiating. Burial will be at the Odebolt Cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.

Visitation will be on Thursay, August 11th, 5-8 p.m. at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Odebolt.
