Leo Shull

Leo Shull, age 93, of Minot, ND, passed away on Thursday, August 5, 2004, at his residence, of natural causes.

He was born February 20, 1911, in Sac City, Iowa, the son of Thomas and Cora (Lane) Shull and was raised and completed his high school there. In 1940, he married Vivian Toomer in Nebraska. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1935 and served in Brazil. Following his discharge, after four and one half years, he returned to Nebraska and worked in airway communications using skills he learned while in the military service. This work evolved into air traffic control with the Federal Aviation Administration.

He and his family lived in North Platte, Grand Island and Lexington, NE, before moving to Minot in 1955. He remained in the employ of the FAA until his retirement in the 1970’s. He and his wife continued to make their home in Minot and spent winters in Yuma, AZ. His wife died in 1996. Several years ago he moved to the Brentmoor.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Minot. At one time he was a ham radio operator and he enjoyed making small furniture pieces.

Survivors include his daughters: Peggy Miller and her husband Jeff of Bismarck, SD, Nancy Loomis of Crystal Lake, IL, and Susan Nickelson and her husband Dan of Spotsylvania, VA; grandchildren: Carmen Miller Purdon, Hans Miller, Bret Loomis, Brannon Mooney, and Jesse and Joel Nickelson; great-grandchildren: Leah Nickelson, Grace, Mia, and Camille Miller, and Claudia Purdon. Other survivors include his brother Robert Shull and wife Ruby of Sac City, brother-in-law Ivan Olson of Sac City, and sister-in-law Betty, Mrs. Vern Grimsman of Lake View.

His parents, brother Arlo, and sister Wilma Cleveland, preceded him in death.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 12, at the Oakland Cemetery in Sac City with Rev. Sharla Hulsey officiating, and flag presentation by the V.F.W. Post No. 590 and American Legion Cantigny Post No. 195 of Sac City.

There will be no visitation. The Farber & Otteman Funeral Home of Sac City in charge of arrangements.
