Leona Helgerson

Leona Helgerson, age 83, of Sac City, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, September 4, 2004 at the Loring Hospital in Sac City, Iowa.

Leona Poen was born on November 18, 1920, the daughter of Will and Maggie (Peters) Poen, on the family farm near Breda, Iowa. At the age of three she and her family moved to a farm northeast of Lake View, Iowa. She attended country school near there.

Leona was confirmed in the Lutheran faith and now attended the First Baptist Church in Sac City.

In September of 1950 Leona was united in marriage to Morton Helgerson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. To this union five children were born, Charles, Inez, Alvin, Lloyd and Milton.

Leona was a homemaker who remained busy raising her family on the farm. She worked in her garden, enjoying her flowers and loved her farm cats. Her other interests included playing cards and Bingo.

She is survived by her children, Charles Helgerson of Lake View, Inez Veerhusen and her husband Rick of Sac City, Alvin Helgerson and his wife Deanne of Lake View, Lloyd Helgerson and his wife Julie of Wall Lake and Milt Helgerson of Pomeroy. Four grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive her.

Leona was preceded in death by her parents, Will and Maggie Poen and two sisters, Grace Spanjer and Wilma Luckow.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 7th, 10:00 am, at the First Baptist Church in Sac City, with Pastor Ross Craig officiating. Phyllis Pontious will accompany Frank Pontious with special music. Jan Mackedanz will take care of the flower arrangements. Pallbearers include the following: Jared Helgerson, Rick Veerhusen, Roger Hallberg, Garry Leonard, Gerald Spanjer, and Scott Spanjer. Burial will be at the Ferguson Cemetery in Lake View under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.

Visitation will be Monday, September 06th, 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City.
