Lawrence Engel

Lawrence Charles Engel, age 84, of Carnarvon, Iowa, passed away on Friday, November 5, 2004, at Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View, IA. He was born on May 8, 1920, in Sac County, Iowa, the son of Hilary and Eugenia (Studer) Engel. He grew up in the Carnarvon area and attended country school and Wall Lake High School.

On February 8, 1945, Lawrence was united in marriage to Marcille O’Tool, in Carroll, Iowa. They were blessed with four daughters and two sons: Kathleen, Gayle, Luann, Elaine, Gary, and Kevin.

He was an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wall Lake and served as an usher and rosary leader.

Lawrence farmed all his life near Carnarvon. He loved farming, and enjoyed the beauty of the crops growing and the farm life. For nine years he worked at Poppin Time and at Vogel Popcorn in Lake View. He enjoyed playing cards, polka music, square dancing, and collecting antique tractors.

Survivors include his sons: Gary Engel and wife Theresa of Madison, WI, and Kevin Engel of Riverside, IA; his daughters: Kathleen and her husband Gary Goetzinger of Sioux Falls, SD, Gayle and her husband John Acker of Minneapolis, MN, Luann Ludwig of Auburn, IA, and Elaine and her husband Don Coats of Sac City, IA; 23 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters: Laura Boes of Breda, IA, Viola Johnson of Carroll, IA, and Elma and husband John Cejka of Pocahontas, IA; extended family members, and friends.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 44 years, Marcille, May 5, 1989, two brothers: Vern and Ray Engel; sister Esther Reising; and son-in-law Neil Ludwig.

Funeral services for Lawrence will be held Tuesday, November 9th, 11:00 a.m., at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wall Lake. Services will be concelebrated by Father John McGuirk, Father Clare Boes, and Father Larry McCarty. Sue Mein will accompany Andrea Acker, soloist, and the St. Joseph’s Choir in special music arrangements. Honorary pallbearers include all of Lawrence’s grandchildren and pallbearers will be the following: Aaron Coats, Tony Acker, Christopher Goetzinger, Joseph Ludwig, Tim Engel, Tyler Engel. Burial will be at the Wall Lake Cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 3:00 – 7:00 pm on Monday, November 8th, at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Wall Lake.
