Jerry Phillips

Jerry Alan Phillips, age 56, of Sac City, Iowa, passed away Sunday, May 2, 2004, at Loring Hospital in Sac City from a sudden illness. Jerry was born November 8, 1947, in Sac City, the son of Peter and Avis (Bettin) Phillips. He lived his entire life in Sac City. Jerry was baptized in the Methodist Church and graduated from Sac City High School in 1966. He continued his education at Southern State Teachers College in Springfield, South Dakota.

Jerry was united in marriage to Shirley Williams on June 2, 1967, at the Presbyterian Church in Lytton. They were blessed with a son, Bob, and a daughter, Stacy. As his children were growing up, Jerry enjoyed attending their activities. His precious granddaughters were a great blessing to him.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Sac City, Past Master of Occidental Masonic Lodge No. 178 A.F. & A.M., Consistory (32nd Degree Mason), past councilman, chairman of Trees Forever, and co-chair of the Chautauqua Parade since 1971.

Jerry’s hobbies included fishing, hunting, and golfing. He enjoyed working in his garden and fishpond, and loved to cook, even for large groups. Jerry loved to be around his friends and could be found cooking up some of their favorite foods. His grill was often in use for weddings or other events, and many enjoyed his homemade salsa. He loved to travel and their trip to Hawaii to celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary was one of his favorite memories.

Jerry owned and operated his own auto body repair business, “Phillips Auto Repair” in Sac City for many years. He also worked as an independent Insurance Adjuster.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley; his daughter, Stacy Phillips and her husband Rick of Sac City, IA; two granddaughters: Aly and Katy Phillips of Sac City; his foster daughter, Melanie Burkitt of Hawaii; his brothers: John (Jack) Phillips and his wife Jackie of Sac City, IA; and James Phillips and his wife Sharon of Phoenix, AZ; his nieces Jill, Jeanette, and Laura and their families; extended family members, and many friends.

Jerry was preceded in death by his son, Bob and his parents, Pete and Avis Phillips.

Funeral services for Jerry will be Thursday, May 6th, 10:30 a.m., at the United Methodist Church in Sac City with Reverend Dean McPherson officiating. Kevin Borkowski and Dustin Bogue will provide special guitar music. Alice Zimmerman and Jackie Stone will take care of the flower arrangements. Honorary pallbearers include: Earl Stone, Ted Zimmerman, Carl Larson, Chuck Zimmerman, David Fethkenher, Greg Fort, Terry Gerken, Jerry Coppens, Dennis McAhren, Ron Lubeck, and Colin McCullough. Pallbearers are the following: Rod Keleher, Eric Shull, Clayton Zimmerman, Jim Gerry, Chad R. Lynch, and Scott Greenlee. Interment will be at the Oakland Cemetery in Sac City under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.

Visitation is 4:00 – 8:00 pm, Wednesday, May 5th, at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City with Masonic services by the Occidental Masonic Lodge No. 178 A.F. & A.M., of Sac City, at 7:00 pm. Friends who wish to send condolences may do so online.
