Herbert Rix, age 86, of Sac City, Iowa, passed away on Monday, October 18, 2004, at Loring Hospital in Sac City. Herbert was born on May 22, 1918, the son of Emil and Anna (Garms) Rix. Herb grew up on a farm north of Sac City, graduated from country school June 3, 1933, and from Sac City High School in 1937. He was baptized at home in the Lutheran faith, confirmed October 4, 1936, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sac City, and was a member of Emmanuel-St. John Lutheran Church of Lytton, Iowa.

On January 8, 1945, Herbert was united in marriage to Lorene Marie Merten in Lytton. To this union two children were born: Thomas and Susan. Herb’s life was the farm, but his love was his family.

Herb farmed all his life. He was well known for his hard work and well cared for farms. As a young boy, the oldest in the family when his father died, he became a “father” to the younger kids and worked the family farm. Herb and Lorene moved off the farm in February of 1981, to Sac City.

Herb enjoyed fishing and yearly family vacations to Minnesota even after retirement. His family has many special memories including some of the following: playing kings in the corner; doing yard work; listening to his stories of his life as a young kid and how hard he had it, with no sympathy from his granddaughters; being voted World’s Best Grandpa by Sam; Samantha and Grandpa’s fishing trip to Minnesota; and playing cards with Katie and being so proud of her scholastic and musical accomplishments.

Left to cherish his memory are his son, Thomas Rix and his wife Carol of Spring Grove, IL; and daughter, Susan Kay Rix of Carroll, IA. His granddaughter, Katie Marie Rix, of Carroll, will treasure and miss him daily. Other survivors include his brothers: Donald Rix and wife Norma of Eureka Springs, AR, and John Rix and wife Lenore of Nevada, IA; sisters: Sally Kolb of Lytton, IA, and Mildred (Mrs. Bernard) Smith of Wichita, KS; sister-in-law Margaret Yender of Early, IA; extended family members, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Anna Rix; his wife Lorene on March 2, 2004; granddaughter Samantha Sue Rix; and brothers: Earl and Robert Rix.
