Harold Dean

Harold Lee Dean, age 95, of Sac City, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, October 24, 2004, at the Loring Care Center in Sac City.

Harold was born December 25, 1908, in Milan, Indiana, one of a pair of twin boys, to Charles Lee and Pearl (Fletcher) Dean. He was baptized in the year 1909 at Milan, Indiana. He attended elementary school in Oakville, Iowa, and high school at Burlington and Huron, Iowa. He continued his education with a B.S. Degree in 1931, M.S. Degree in 1932, and Ph.D. Degree in 1935, all at Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa.

On June 15, 1936, Harold was married to Margaret Ann Ralph at Collegiate United Methodist Church in Ames. They lived in Arkansas until 1941, and then moved to Fort Worth, Texas, until 2000, (spending retirement summers in Sac City). In 2000 they moved to Sac City to live all year round.

He was employed at Conway, Monticello, Hope and then Little Rock, Arkansas, as a Soil Scientist for the Soil Conservation Service. He was then transferred to Fort Worth where he was promoted a couple of years later to head the Regional Cartographic Office, retiring in June 1972.

Harold was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Sac City Lions Club. His hobbies include basketball, softball, and farming.

Survivors include his wife Margaret; son Harold R. Dean and his wife Nancy of Boone, IA; daughter Annette Steinfel and husband Richard of Fort Worth, TX; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; twin brother Hartzell Dean of Dallas, TX; and extended family members.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 28th, 10:30 am, at the United Methodist Church in Sac City, with Reverend Dean McPherson officiating. Susan McPherson will be the soloist accompanied by Lorna Youll. The Sac City Lion’s Club will be honorary pallbearers. Active pallbearers include the following: Lucian Russell, James Galbraith, Dan Martin, Dennis McLaughlin, Denny McLaughlin, and Leonard Simpson. Burial will be at the Cory Grove Cemetery in Sac City under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 27th, from 5:00-8:00 pm, at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City.
