DeVon Dale Freeman
Memorial services for DeVon Freeman will be held Saturday, October
9th, 10:00 a.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sac City with
Father Larry McCarty officiating. Steve Goecke will provide special
music accompanied by Charles Schulte. Honorary pallbearers include
the following: Colin Frank, Heidi Engeman, Andrew Freeman, Evan Freeman,
Kayla Settje, Hannah Frank, and Derrell R. Lynch. Interment with military
graveside honors will be at the Oakland Cemetery, under the direction
of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.
DeVon Dale Freeman, age 82, of Sac City, Iowa, passed
away on Wednesday, October 6, 2004, at his home. DeVon,
the son of Roy Dale and Veda Maude (Davis) Freeman,
was born December 2, 1921, in Sac County. He attended
country school and graduated from Sac City High School
in 1942. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on July
17, 1942, in Des Moines. He served as a Sergeant with
the 3rd U. S. Marine Division and was honorably discharged
on December 20, 1945, at Great Lakes, IL .He was a
Rifle Instructor for one year before serving in the
South Pacific Theater. He received battle stars for
the battles in Guam, Marianas Islands and Iwo Jima.
He returned to Sac City and worked for the Ford garage
as a mechanic and service manager from 1946 to 1962.
From 1962 until retiring in December 1985, he worked
as a lineman and line foreman for the Sac County REC.
On May 27, 1948, he was united in marriage to Frances
Wiegand in Sac City. They made their home on an acreage
south of Sac City. To this union four children were
born: Beth, John, Joan, and Richard.
DeVon was a 60 year member of both Sac City veterans’
organizations: Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post No.
590, and American Legion Cantigny Post No. 195, and
a charter member of the Sac City Gun Club. He enjoyed
trap shooting, and treasured the time spent with his
children and grandchildren, and having coffee with
his friends and tending his beloved acres.
DeVon is survived by his wife, Frances; two daughters:
Beth Frank of Armstrong and Joan Day of Des Moines;
two sons: John and his wife Cinthia of Mingo, and
Richard of Storm Lake; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren;
and three sisters-in-law: Virginia Freeman of Fonda,
Gwen Gibbons and her husband Roland of Sac City, and
Marie Ausborn and her husband Gerhard of Sac City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers:
Gaylord, Wayne, and George; three sisters: Glennadeen
Anderson, Ardyth Henrich, and Leola Henrich; a grandson
Ben Frank; and a great-grandson Benjamin Frank.
