Velma Ulven

Graveside services for Velma Ulven, age 81, of Lake, Iowa, will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, September, 5, 2003, at Ferguson Cemetery, Lake View, Reverend Jerry Schultz officiating.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 4, 4:00-8:00 pm, at Farber & Otteman Funeral Home, Lake View.

Velma (Smidt) Ulven, age 81, of Lake View, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, September 2, 2003, at the Fonda Care Center.

Velma Smidt was born on March 17, 1922, at Grandville, Nebraska, the daughter of Fred W. and Minnie (Krenzien) Smidt. She attended school through the eighth grade in Sac City.

On July 30, 1950, Velma was united in marriage to Bennett C. Ulven at the Presbyterian Church in Sac City. They had three children: Fred, Alan, and Mindy.
She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Velma worked with her husband at the Lumberyard in Webb, IA, and also worked at the Vilas and Bil-Mar Turkey Plant in Storm Lake for several years. She enjoyed playing cards, watching baseball, fishing, and tending her flower garden. Velma attended church at the Methodist Church in Lake View.

She is survived by her children: Fred Ulven and his wife Marty of Storm Lake, IA, Alan Ulven of Cherokee, IA, and Mindy Gehrig and her husband Ron of Fonda; 7 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers: Carl Smidt, Irvin Smidt and his wife Wilma, and Harvey Smidt and his wife Annabell all of Lake View, IA; 4 sisters: Matilda Beckman, Della Buse and her husband Luverne and Lavon Karstens all of Lake View, and Clara Freese of Oklahoma.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents; husband Bennett; and a great granddaughter Rebecca Ulven.
