Elmer J. Christensen
Elmer was born, May 21, 1912, in Gardner, Illinois, the son of Soren and Hilda (Sondergaard) Christensen. He spent most of his life in Newell. On March 20, 1936, he was united in marriage to Winifred E. Waterman in Dakota County, Nebraska. To this union three sons were born: James, Steven and Gerald. Elmer spent his early years associated with Skelly Oil. He later owned and operated Elmer’s Bar and Poolhall until 1977. After retirement he continued to help his son Gerald at the Old Saloon in Newell until 1987. Elmer was a member of the First Congregational Church of Newell. His interests included bowling, playing horseshoes, golf, and he always enjoyed a game of poker. Survivors include his three sons and their wives: Jim and Marilyn, Jerry and Cathy all of Newell, and Steve and Vera of Decorah, Iowa. Other survivors include his seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and special friend Beulah Wilson. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents Soren and Hilda Christensen; his wife Winifred in 1989; three brothers: Marian, John, and Axel; and a granddaughter Julie Christensen. Service for Elmer J. Christensen is Saturday, November 8, 2003, 10:00 a.m., at the Frist Congregational Church, Newell, Iowa, with Reverend Greg Baskerville officiating. Music provided by Donna Larsen, organist, along with Congregational singing. Honorary pallbearers include Brooke Tappe, Doug Lange and Jeff Lange. Casketbearers include: Mike Christensen, Craig Hirsh, Jay Johnson, Tony Christensen, Rob Danielson, and Steve Christensen. Burial will be at the Newell Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. |
